This month is my one year anniversary. One year since I came back to surfing after a 23-year hiatus. One year since I began my first ever home-made surfboard. One year since I discovered the internet as a source for boardbuilding info. (OK, my profile says I'm about 6 weeks short of one year on Swaylocks, but I found the wood board builders forum first, and Swaylocks shortly after).
In my past year, I've built 5 surfboards, repaired one that was broken in half (thanks lockedin for donating that one to my research), met and paddled out with several Swaylocks bro's, and kinda sorta got my sea-legs back, which is an accomplishment at age 55 and living in Bakersfield the armpit of the state LOL!
To commemorate my first year, I'm gonna inaugurate my first annual board swap - if anyone is interested. Give me some idea of the shape you want, and I'll build you a Huck Board (wood will feature largely, of course), in exchange for a custom board you build for me. I'm not too particular, I can tell you whatever you need to know about my surfing, and you decide what you think'll be best for me.
If anyone is interested, pm me, and we can discuss it. If it works out, I will begin your new Huck original. These things take some time, so who knows when it'll be paddle-ready. But I'm up for the challenge, if anyone else is! Oh yeah, and I do want some surfing pics of the board in action!
would like to but I am in Oz...good offer though, hopefully you'll get someone and you both get 2 super sweet new sleds....
wow Huck!
I may take you up on that deal
Ive never owned a hollow wood board
If you're in the area and would like to check out the LowTech Lab... let me know....
If you would like to test ride one of my boards...no problem....
Ray
Hey Ray, thanks for the offer. Not sure what the LowTech Lab is (your garage?), or where "the area" is, but it all sounds good!
Mainly just looking for someone who wants to do a board swap, I'll build you one you build me one. My boards are not perfect, they have their flaws, but if someone believes in my boards enough to commit, then I'll give it my best! (I should add that due to the size of my little shaping shack, 8' is about the limit of how long I can reasonably go).

San Marcos ,Ca
OK, cool - that's down San Diego way? Don't get down that way much, but you never know!
I'm looking for something in the long 6' or short 7' range for myself, as I transition down to a shorter board for the winter. I can only handle about up to 8' in what I can produce in my little backyard man-cave.
Man Cave ????????
white picket fence,,,???????
I love ya Huck ,,, but ,,,, your killin me,,,, LOL!,,, seriously,,, Im bustin a gut!
please tell me theres a secret entrance so you dont get noticed comming and going,
but on another note my gal thinks its adorable
hahaha, the outside is disguised. Its whats inside that makes it my man cave.
It actually was built orginally for my wife - to store her books for internet book selling business. But I hijacked it to make it my "board room" before she ever got to use it.
If that pic cracks you up, you should have seen what my wife did to it when my daughter and her husband came for a visit from Montana.
Huck, funny you would post this. I was thinking of posting a "board loan/exchange" thread. I haven't worked through the details, but thought we could loan each other boards that we have built and see how they are built and how they ride. I have had nothing but good experiences with doing biz with fellow Sways guys, I am not concerned about the security aspect. I may post another thread latter today.
Personally I'm always ready to learn, although I do not always like being taught. - Winston Churchill
Hey Greg, hope that works out, sounds like fun. Myself, I'm just looking for a permanent, one-time board swap. I'll build a custom for someone, if they'll build a custom for me. Custom with a lot of leeway for the shaper to go with his own vision, that is.
I'm not really a longboarder per se, although I own a couple and they've been great for small days and helping me to get my sea legs back. When I left surfing 23 (well, now its 24) years ago, I was riding a 5'11" fish and a 6'7" swallowtail single fin. I also had a 7' diamond tail single fin.
Being away from surfing for 23 years, I've never owned or ridden a thruster, I've never owned or ridden a quad. I've never owned or ridden a modern shortboard - although I would need something designed for an older guy, along the lines of this thread http://www2.swaylocks.com/forums/older-guys-shortboard
So I thought I'd trust a more experienced shaper to build me something along those lines, in exchange for a custom one-of-a-kind Huck surfboard. I think I would have a bite if I was in oz, or could build a longboard. I'm in southern California (think Malibu to Morro Bay), and my little backyard shack will only handle up to about 8'.
I could just build my own older guy's shortboard, and in fact, I've already begun one. But I also want to take my boardbuilding to the next level, and I thought building a board for someone else would be a good challenge, if a bit stressful because its something I've never done. So this way I could kill two birds with one stone - get a modern "older guys" shortboard for myself designed by an experienced shaper, and get one of my boards into the hands of another surfer/shaper.
Im glad you see the humor in my post
Im still chuckling
how bout a lopez style lightning bolt about 7'.6"
with a bolt on the deck ,, wall hanger of course
and I could do you up a veneer color combo board
what style are you looking for?
egg, fish, retro, hybrid, mini mal ,, dingy???
I could do a 7'6" lightning bolt, if I had a little leeway, since I don't do "exact copies".
And I'm really not interested in doing a wall-hanger. I guess I could, but it would sure take the joy out of the project for me. It actually kinda bugs me that people want to put wood boards in the "only good for a wall hanger" category, so I really prefer to make a board for someone who wants to ride it.
I'm looking for an "older guy's shortboard", along the lines of this thread http://www2.swaylocks.com/forums/older-guys-shortboard, preferably a thruster or quad, since I've never owned or ridden either.
Huck
dont get me wrong
the board must be surfable
your boards are of wallhanger quality whether you like it or not.
I usualy dont surf anything under 9 ft
but would love to own one of your creations, and swaping boards sounds like a doable way to go about it
So Im thinking for you,, a board of similar shape with a bit wider tail,, thrusterized or two + one
kind of a modern retro , sleek and thick with modern rails and bottom,, you know ,,, a nice carver,
with some special beuty to it ,,, so you could hang it on the wall if you wanted
you know theres no better feeling than having someone tell you "that board is F'n bitchen"
Well, I would definitely be honored to have one of your boards. I hope you realize my boards look better in small pics than in real life LOL! I really want to build a board you would ride, 'tho, so maybe I'll shoot for a 9'er, even if it means I have to push the limits of my shaping space. I have a 9' rockin fig, maybe something like this?
I'll trust you to make me something that will be fun for me to surf in mid sized waves with a bit of punch.
--------------
So I've narrowed your board down to these two basic shapes, 9' on the left, 7'6" on the right, you choose:
what are ur hieght and weight?
me 5.8 200
5.7, 175, want something that works well in 4-6' point break surf
so, for you....9' longboard, or 7' 6" lightening bolt?
I think the 7.6 bolt would be cool
I might be able to get you a template from Spitzer
you need to be a little more specific on what you would want
mabe a step up or semigun with some added volume??
new school or old school?? wide point fore or aft?
Edit: you know if you realy want me to surf this board you may need to stretch out the Lopez bolt to 9 feet long
I would definetly surf that
I got longboards layin all over
New school
Wide point middle or aft
I guess.
Like I say, I'm open to suggestions. I've been away from surfing for a long time. Never rode a thruster or quad. Since I came back, I've been riding retrofishes, longboards, and eggs, and enjoying all of them, especially the longboards and eggs. I'd like to try something a little more contemporary (for the older guy who doesn't get out every day). With a little volume for getting in early, but enough rocker to handle a late drop, that projects down the line, something I can take out when its head-high. Like in the 6'8" to 7'2" range. I don't do airs or any real high performance stuff. If I could surf like anyone in my dreams, it would be like Rob Machado or Tom Curren - fluid, smooth, you know?
BTW, let me know about that template. Because my normal m.o. is just to draw it out until it looks right, then scale my drawing to full size. I'll get started once you tell me to go, but if you want me to wait for the template I will. You can also tell me about rocker and anything else you're particular about, or else direct me to photos that you like and I'll study the photos and go from there. Like I say, I don't do exact copies, so its no problem for me to go off pictures, they just gotta be good pictures from different angles. And please don't use the "W" word again, it really rattles me, LOL.
Looking forward to this! My first board for someone else!
you know ,,,,
what would be realy cool ,,,???
If we were going in the same direction in length
but you want short and I want long,,,
we could agree on a length and style
then you do up mine and I do up yours
you use your techniqes and I use mine ...
that to me sound more closer to being fare..
cause your boards are way more labor intense than mine, I would guess to say
I want to check on a template ,, if available
so dont get in a big rush as of yet
I get the idea of what your looking for
something modern like a step up 7 or 7.2 full volume wide point slightly aft , like 1" back,,,maybe at center, I will have to play with the outline.
wide pin tail maybe round ,, rails down, flat bottom to dbl concave through the fins, thruster. hard edge in the tail
bitchen veneer deck, color bottom, pinlines ,,, Probox fin system,,
gloss polish pu/pe construction
whats your color?
anyone else want to sack up?
Hucks in Bakersfield
Im in Yorba Linda
we are contemplating doing this,,, any nay sayers?
If it works out, I'll most likely be doing it again (I know I'm gonna love whatever I get, just hope you aren't too diasppointed, or it doesn't spring a leak first time out or whatever LOL). Get me all the info a.s.a.p., 'cuz I'm anxious to get started, and like I say, these things take a bit of time. Maybe I'll post a blow-by-blow here, so anyone can watch the folly unfold!
why would I be disapointed???
just dont paint it and I will be good
just curious are you up for poly gloss? or still chicken,, LOL
hahaha - you know its gotta have something painted on there, its become my trademark! BTW I always glass with epoxy then poly gloss on all my boards (except the orange one, and I'm doing some remedial work on it and probably gonna poly it too). I'm sure my boards are not as technically perfect as yours - you get what you get, no written contract, but if you don't like it, you don't have to do it. Just sayin'. I'm planning on you'll like it, but 30 years doing custom craftsmanship for the client I've learned that you can't always predict the outcome LOL. Not too late to back out either, up to you.
Huck
got a templat comming, so hold on to you britches
dont get me wrong Huck
your painting is top notch
I was mind setting on your excellant wood working skills
and would hate to see you cover it up with paint
I am not backing out , we can go forward but Herb Spitzer is gonna bring me by a retro bolt template that will give you outline referance
you may need to stretch it and blend as it maybe short,, but its a start
I pmed you my #
lets talk
shurly you have some thoughts for your board
Its on! I admire your intestinal fortitude LOL.
Huck
come on give me some input for a design Idea
so far I got blue or maybe purple
Im thinking something classy like sky blue with veneer patterned deck
any idea's???
Ken - you are an artist - would I presume to direct Michaelangelo? My only advice is Don't overdo it - I'm a simple man with simple tastes.
same here
clean and simple
how did I manage to overlook this thread..?
got me thinking - anyone in the UK interested?
Huck
I got the template, its 9.6 I think
Herb said its a spin template and you should be able to adjust as needed
Please make it as long as you can, cause Im getting fat and slow,, ha ha
funnt ,,, that your going shorter as you get back into surfing,,,, good for you,, stay healthy
I have Dr appointments and some out of town work comming up ,, but I will start on yours soon enough.
Im still pondering the masterpiece you shall recieve,,,, undecir=ded on design asthetics.
Take your time. OK, I'll see if I can do this at 9'6". It'll be a challenge, but that's what I asked for LOL. I did rebuild that 9'6" that was broken in two, so it'll fit in that girly-man-cave of mine, but how many times did I get resin on my pants just trying to get out the door hahaha. Thing is, I break out in hives when I hear the "W" word, because even some guys who build wood boards tell me they're too heavy to ride any good, and I just don't believe it. Of course, I don't rip like Taj or anything, but even Roger Hall, who builds foam boards for a living, prefers wood boards for his own quiver. Anyway, to each their own, everyone can ride what they like - I'm not trying to start a forum war or anything, and I don't want to start getting personal messages from guys telling me they know Brewer and Lopez and so therefore I can't disagree with them online LOL.
When I first got back into surfing I started with a 6'10 retro fish, and really enjoyed it. True, my wave count sucked, but that had to be partially due to a 23-year layoff from surfing. Now, at the advice of a lot of the sages here, I've got two longboards and love 'em. But when the bigger waves come, I feel more comfortable on a smaller board, since that's what I rode most my surfing life back in the day. Growin' old sucks for sure, so we just gotta take one day at a time and be glad for what we have today, and not worry about tomorrow too much, other than takin' care of ourselves. I just want to thank you for taking me up on the offer, it does my heart good to be building my first board for a "client", I'm stoked on getting started once the template arrives.
Huck
call me what you want ,,ur Your my friend and we're gonna have fun doing this with a reward for both at the end of the build
