Hobie passed away yesterday, he was not forgotten as Brian Williams acknowledged his passing on "the NBC NIghtly News".
Hobie was a true pioneer in the surfing and sailing worlds. He is largely responsible for influencing Grubby Clark to set up and offer polyurethane cores to the surfing industry through his company Clark Foam. Hobie was an early day shaper responsible for bringing many other talented shapers into the fold of his surfboard company including Terry Martin, Phil Edwards, and Dick Brewer, just to name a few. His diamond shape label became an iconic silhouette known world wide for consistent quality surfboards.
Hobie also developed and offered skateboards, sunglasses, a clothing line and one of his biggest successes; the Hobie Cat. Always looking for a new toy, his enjoyment of fishing and spending more time on the water resulted in developing small personal watercraft like the "Mirage" and "Adventrurer" that allows the activist to fish, dive and explore oceans, lakes and rivers. He also enjoyed paddling SUPS; a tranquil alternative for maintaining core strength. Hobie enjoyed flying Remote Control Aircraft as a hobby.
I met Hobie one evening after a San Diego tradeshow at an Old Town Mexican restaurant where he was sitting by himself in a booth. He invited me to sit, and I will never forget the conversation we had. He was a generous, intelligent, insightful man that very few people today could even begin to fill his shoes.
My sincerest condolences to his family and close friends.
