Quickest , most efficient and sucessful way to learn shapes is on the machine .
And most machine operators will guide you .
Few will run away from that .
Jim as all know is super excited about this shaping thing and hopefully will see how the machine could be a very good friend aiding his learning process . :-)
The only reason I don't send a file to a CNC to get cut is because I'm fairly certain my CAD files suck way too hard to get a clean cut. My handshaping skills aren't much better but I have the advantage of only embarrassing myself when I do it inhouse; whereas taking it to a 3rd party to be cut would expose me to the humiliation of someone else seeing my suckiness.
ehhhh, Check out Global Surf Industries. They make all the plain white boards you see in shops that look decent at first, but fall apart after a few sessions. They produce many different labels and put the tiniest "made in China" sticker on them which can be peeled off after the boards go through customs. They use shit materials and have kids and women doing the labor, not surfers. They work in countries where the importance of being somewhat environmentally conscience is out-weighed by the quest for higher profit margins. Then they sell all their overstock to shops at the end of the season for a price no local board builders can compete with. They are the enemy!
example:
You want to start a board company. You go to their website, look at the shapes they offer, pick the ones you like, send them your art and some cash, then a few weeks later, you have a container of boards showing up. You bought in bulk and got a ridiculous deal on the boards, now you can sell them for next to nothing to an unknowing customer or someone who doesn't care where or who makes their surfboard.

Plenty of operations here at home and on both coasts where you can do the same thing. All you need is a logo for them to slap on the boards they sell you.....heck they would probably design the logos for you. Get a heck of a discount if you order 20 or more.
Ty Hof! I'll take a look. I'm all for good old fashioned American quality fyi- reason i bought me my Skil 100. But I'm not down on cnc cuts either. I just dont sell enough boards. If i do, well i can see a reason. For me "tooling" is my way to mental orgasm FWIW.

You don't sell enough boards?????!!!!!! No buddy, you don't sell any. Hey, perhaps you could create an alter ego login or two to pose as satisfied customers. Heck they could even join your super duper shapa club.
Opportunity? Are you fucking kidding me? Opportunity "a set of circumstances that makes it possible to do something" Opportunity is generally more referenced when something out of the ordinary presents itself to allow you to do something that you wouldnt normally have the chance.
There is no "Opportunity" to use a machine, they are a service, available to anyone, anywhere at anytime. You can just as easily get a board cut as you can walk into a 7-11 and buy a Rockstar. I buy a Rockstar every morning, its not a special opportunity I have. Its a product, I want, so i buy it. Its not exclusive to me, I didnt get some magic code from Rockstar that only allows me and select energy drink likers a unique chance to put a shitty product into our bodies. Anyone can do it, from me, to Jorge the gardner, to Tom the Manager at Skechers or whomever else wants one. Coincidently with a laptop and half a brain, they can also drink those Rockstars while playing on Shape3d or AKU and send me a file to cut a blank that i will sell them all day long because there is no exclusivity or Opportunity to it. You send me an email with a file, I cut it end of story, I dont care who you are as long as you pay my fees. Its business. thats how it works for myself and everyone else running cuts I know from So-cal, to SC to the east coast, to Australia etc etc etc.
