I agree with your even keeled recap of what this thread is about (now that I've had the benefit of reading it). And I wholeheartedly agree with Reverb's sentiment of what he feels is right or wrong.
In simple language...... if you want a board that works in defying death at Mavericks get one from Randy (Cone) Jeff Clark or Bob Pearson, or one of the other knowledgeable hard chargers that have the experience to get you down that pit of a wave face with the correct rocker and volume that a tape measure COULD NEVER divulge!
Being someone that is well respected for my uncanny ability to replicate a surfboard from any shaper, I can tell you that you sure as hell can't even begin to approach creating a genuine accurate replica without the knowledge of how to use a rocker stick, contour and thickness calipers, the right blank, the significance of deck rocker to bottom rocker, AND....... a shitload of handshaping experience to even begin to do the original justice...... yes, I could take the gazillion dims I do then put it on a computer, to "build a board from scratch".... but the whole totality of compound curves in perfect harmony comes from having the original there while doing the actual replication......... and that is as a HAND SHAPER.
Unless this guy walked up and had one of the new handheld scanners....... state of the art gizmo, you can't evn think he is going to hit the mark other than to take some tape measure dims for an outline and fin placement to give unsuspecting wannabe big wave heroes a board that they should not be buying in the first place...... it kinda starts to parallel the idiots out there doing tow ins that are a danger to themselves and everyone else.
It's kind of ironic that in this sucky world of branding and commercialism that one saying coined from a big surf corporation rings true:
ONLY A SURFER KNOWS THE FEELING.
Forget the hype, get the right stuff from the right people........ shapers shape, surfers surf, everybody else is just on the sidelines.
The guy that started the thread pulled all his comments......so how do we deal with that? Nice or mean.... how do you talk to this guy. I have lost friends over this thread.....
The first guy bailed....walked away.....logged on for this thread and then left sways forever.......and today I see a post from a new guy wanting fin placement numbers.....someone gave him what he needed....did not even need to measure a board. or "steal"
