Just picked up my slightly tailored Megamind shaped by Mike. 6'1" x 22 5/8" x 2 3/4" 1.66CF/47L I'm 6'3 240LBS and absolutely love this shape for thigh high to overhead waves. Pretty much my daily driver here in Central Florida. These boards are looking so clean!
seems like Kick got a nice update. the cloth with the smaller dimples... isnt that the same as the last Grid's that went into production?? I remember it being tough as F.
I've been in Jbay for an hour haven't gotten to surf yet and my coil is already blowing minds. Not that my surfing after a year and a half not surfing is going to impress anyone. Ride report to follow.
Over a week here, not a ding on the boards, despite some pretty rough beatings on the rocks. But more importantly the boards work amazing. I've mainly ridden my 5'10" squash in everything from waist high playful reefs, to head high french style dredging beach breaks to pumping super tubes the recent slater video was my second day surfing in a year and a half. The board has no problem with 50kmph offshore winds, on shores or reasonable devil winds. 10 out of 10.
i live in hawaii and i am a very good surfer. i ordered a coil from mike at the beginning of the summer and i rode the snot out of it for a few weeks then it started sucking up water like a sponge and it went completely dead. no open dings. mike made good on it and sent me a new one a couple of months later and it was better than the first one. i rode the snot out of that one for a few weeks until it mysteriously had a huge gash on the bottom below one of the fin boxes. i have no idea where it came from or how it got there. the ding is since fixed and the board restored but my stoke not so much.
these guys are good shapers. they know how to make a board that works. the construction is not magic and it's not indestructable. in addition to the aforementioned ding i have normal pressures on the deck after a few solid surfs just like any poly board. if you are not getting pressures on your board then it is not the board it is your surfing
since this is the primary forum for advertising i thought it would be beneficial to get a real perspective instead of a weekend warrior on a 6'3 x 21 x 2-1/2. if you do fit that description than by all means go nuts and sorry to rain on your parade. as long as you are having fun that's all that counts
when you order a board from these guys you will get a custom surfboard the way you want it and it will be lighter than the second shit of the day. it will not be indestructable nor will it be some magic mushroom that makes rainbows dance and surfing gnomes carry you up the beach after you stick your first straight air.
its also about the same price or cheaper than a chinese pop out which probably makes it worth while for that fact alone.
Not a weekend warrior here but whatever. I have a bunch of coils and they have all been pretty good to me. I just got back from Nica and managed to take the board across the rocks at manzanillo. Ripped a fin out ground a 1/4 inch off the other and had some scratches on the bottom of the board. I was expecting complete destruction of thr bottom of the board. I know they dont claim to be indestructable. I have had shitty channel islands, lost the list goes on so whatever whatever
So aparently coils are becoming popular in Hawaii, and you are the disgruntaled compeittor. Cant come on this form and rag on Coil, too many on here know better.
Yes coils break. I know first hand. My board is ding free, the only one out of the entire hostel during a three week stay at j bay. If you think airlines are rough on boards, you should see what my boards have been through traveling on buses around Africa. I got off the bus one time to get my board to see a 300lb sack of potatoes on it after having travelled 14hrs over very rough roads which caused people to get bounces from their seats into the aisles. Not a ding to be seen. Boards can and do break if you aren't careful with them, my first dimpled coil didn't last very long it was also stupidly light. Its' replacement is holding up excellent though it doesnt have malny hours on it.My daily driver grid lasted close to two years. My first coil, solid white era, lasted a year under my use and was already 1.5 years old at that point and was a pro's used board. The shapes are excellent, as are the shapers which is worth the price alone.
So for the last 6 years, I was strictly Coil customs. But for no other reason than variety, I started looking at other alternative shapers/ constructions. It always shocks me that Coil keeps their prices so low. Here's some other companies ive looked into for comparison: Vulcan Convex technology $900+, ...lost/ Inspired Black Dart & Carbon Cork $800, Mandala Carbon Microlight $1200, Proctor Carbon Footprint $900-1200. And a Coil that is more durable, lively, lighter, etc. still starts under $700 if im not mistaken... Crazy
We have a new smooth finish option, no extra charge at this time. But then I looked at that post about other manufacturer's prices and it looks like we should be charging a lot more lol.

I was starting to fear you'd hit market saturation, with the boards' longevity working against you. (There is something to planned obsolescence, you know.)
In all seriousness, I always enjoy seeing your handiwork. On the last board I made for myself, I went ahead and followed your volume guidelines. Go figure - it feels better underfoot than anything I've shaped for the last ten years. I wanted to thank you for that.
Don't worry, though. At a production rate of one mediocre board every 2 years or so, I doubt I'm a threat to anyone's business.
If you do and there's not likely to be a ride report from an "independent" Sways user, I'd be happy to hear one from yourself or one of the other people from Coil (e.g. I get the impression the Brasington brothers are the ones shaping the longboards - would be happy to hear from one of them).
Mike, My Inquiry was to Knowalana, It is nice looking board. Very clean lines. Just thought he would have some info on the ride., as well as the some info on the Bottom contours fin set up and overall dimensions. Since you have made a couple
what is the feed back you are getting? I'll send you an email as I would be very interested in getting a travel board.

Hey guys. After a long hiatus of not owning my own board, I'm looking to Craigslist to score something.
I'm 5'11, 195 lbs in athletic shape and intermediate skill, preferring the chest to head high NJ waves .
I came across the Coil "Blur" which looks right up my alley.
6'2" x 19.75" x 2.5" x 1.1 cubic feet
"Kick" finish and "Hawaii" glassing.
The guy wants $450.
What can you tell me about the board? Think it will float me sufficiently and work well for what I'm looking for (a do it all board)?
Thanks!
On personal experience, vanilla Blur didn't click with me, there was something off every time I tried that board. However it was far from being a bad board, turned great, excellent range, but the "feel" wasn't there for me. However, Mike knows it's my "go-to" outline + foil for custom boards for a good reason: superb balance. That blue cutie posted earlier is my latest and greatest blend to date (review pending).
A lot of guys out there love unmodified Blurs. I'd say go for it, there is so much that can go right for you in that shape.
Doubtful, 1.1 cu/ft = 31.15 L (real L, not industry-leading-half-ass measurements), I think thats plenty of volume even with a suit. But then, my boards are low vol.
So I'm arguably one of the most stoked guys every time I get a new board that works beyond anything I had imagined (since it's a custom), and this time is no different, this is why I waited more than usual to review it.
Just as a reminder, this board is a wider nose/tail Blur outline with a Qualifier rocker tailored for speed while keeping peak performance.
Usually all-rounders have been a miss for me, they either don't perform or feel sluggish down the line, those days are finally over. Funny enough, it was never intended for anything other than surfing lefts (cause goofy foot).
It's unfair to say it feels like 'X' shape, it is unique, but its not easy to describe without comparing it so.... Qualifier-like performance with WB-like speed and doesn't feel like an 'in-betweener', if I now its decent or better, this is the one to grab.
There's enough foam/planning surface for some grovel and it's volume is low enough for OH+ without breaking a sweat, the short rail diamond tail makes it feel shorter and handles power as good as a round tail. Paddles great thanks to the lower nose rocker but doesn't catch on turns unlike its predecessors.
Of course, since its not a specialty shape, it doesn't outshine a purebreed Qualifier or an M80-S in their respective elements, but it may as well be a one board quiver or a performance oriented 3-board quiver.
For me, this is what the Blur should have been all along and I'd even go as far as saying it should replace it entirely from the Coil lineup (or at least be part of it), it is THAT good and it deserves to be baptized with a bad ass name.
This will be my 6th Megamind. Absolutely love this shape. I've been trying slightly different modifications with each custom, I think this is THE one! 6'0" x 22 5/8" x 3" 1.75CF I'm 6'3 240lbs. Added wings and a slightly more progressive nose.
Ok showing my age here. Noticed the hawk nose on that board. getting a little more foam under the chest. I Like that. The whole board has a very pleasing look Nice Job Mike on the shape and the glass work excellent.

Thanks for the props, guys.
Artz, I do the beak noses on angular looking boards sometimes because it just seems to fit. And you're correct, on this one it was also a way of maintaining volume all the way forward. A 6'0" for a guy that weighs almost 250 needs to maintain volume lol.
I learned to shape back in the beak-nose days, but by about 85 I'd started flattening the deck side and thinning the tip. When the retro thing started about 15 years ago I thought I'd bring back some beaks. It's easy to shape if you have the balls to just drive your primary rail band right off the tip with the planer. The two bands meet at tip and form the perfect beak. Very little fine sanding required if done correctly. (Also easier to do w/o stringer as the wood can explode. Don't ask me how I know this lol)
Mike it's nice touch. I like meat in board can't surf a wave if you can't catch a wave. Shapers like you know how to foil and and hide that extra foam. The Boards look all thin and sexy yet there it is a solid board that will get you into waves . Again that was avery nice looking board. Just had a new Robin Mair delivered 9'5" quad plus one have my 'short board a 8'6" Fowler now I am thinking in the fall about a knee board when my back is in revolt. Coil might be nice.

Awesome to see this thread wake up after a 6-month hiatus. As always, I see the coil crew is mixing in some new tech. Thanks for posting that mega-mind. The thing looks sick.
Well the new Megamind goes as insane as she looks!! Incredibly fast and is knifier than previous versions I've had made with the more progressive/pointed nose. The wings seem to really help release fins while finishing turns which has been an absolute blast. Trying her our with the MR twin fins and nubster as well as the FCS Keel set soon so I'll report back on which fin setups I like best. Currently my go to fins are FCS2 XL performer side fins with L performer quad rears. Here's a few shots of me from our shorebreak spot here in Sebastian a few days ago on her. Check me out on Instagram - @jasondhines. Will be posting some GoPro clips and more pics of me surfing in the near future. Plenty of surf lineup eye candy too! Cheers!
Good for you Catfish. Wednesday was really fun surf. Did you ride it as a quad?
Personally I'm always ready to learn, although I do not always like being taught. - Winston Churchill
Yes Greg , I put the simion quads in and they work great . thanks for going out of your way to meet me.

Sure been quiet around these parts.
What's going on in the coil universe? I love seeing the new boards and hearing the stoke from all y'all.
Is it cause haters be hatin? Don't pay them no mind.
We have to be quiet because every time we make any noise we get too many orders and get backed up for like 5 months.

FWIW, I don't think that longboard belongs to KA, I think he just somehow found that picture.
