The few talented craftsmen must learn how to get more affection from the sheep. Scrapping for love is a competitive game...........did I mention boards that flex like a banshee!
delbert tell me more on this basalt fibre????was that 92% more tensile strength than s glass or standard glass??? e glass has tensile modulous of 1.0 s glass i think is about 1.3 and kevlar i think is about 1.35 or more that would give this basalt stuff at least 1.92 that is sick where can i get some ...i will give it the usual run of tests .....rarely have i ever used a product that wasnt given a little bit of the old hard sell...even data sheets can be a little exagerated . ...as far as surftech is concerned they are the best thing that ever happened to me coz they putting more surfers in the water on epoxy boards ...but inevetibly every surfer wants a custom made board and thats what i specialize in is sandwich constructed customs ive built thousands of eps sandwich boards and no two are the same (we can make them the same if we have to )... also i think the cheap chinese poly pu boards arent that bad either....they are not the end of the industry...i dono whats happening in the U.S. but over here a lot of the bigger manufacturers have racks of chinese boards in there shops but still make customs out the back....more cheap boards on the market encourages more people to take up surfing ,,who will need legropes ,board covers ,deckgrip, wax, wetsuits, and will wanna dress like surfers, they will need there boards repaired, and most of all when they get better will want a custom made poly pu board by a local shaper ...so having cheap imports coming in only solidifys the current shapers positions at the top of the triangle..... the only people it does affect are the bigger production houses who rely on clone shaping the latest popular names.. as far as the little custom board builder hes in the best position.... regards BERT
Bert, there was some discussion of basalt fabrics here a while back, they might still be in the archives. Most of them come from Russia but one web site I found had a US distributor (don't know about down under) and one was Canadian... these fabrics have some unusual properties, eg. they block EMF and heat -- perfect for surfing waves caused by lava flows or bow wakes of nuclear subs I suppose.
