I am building my first board. I found an old blank in the trash. Talk about learning on the cheap. If I could buy just 1 planer, what planer should I get?
For sure you will need a hand plane for taking down the stringer. A small one for getting in the nose curve. A small one can serve double duty but I use the 7" stanley for the main stringer. All need "tuning" ..sharpening out of the box. Cheap power planer, Harbour Freight (Hitachi knock off) Tune it and it will work fine for awhile. Does not have sealed bearings! I blow mine out after every board. Build some good cheap shaping stands out of 2 x 4's and foam. Makes things easier. Krokus http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=32222

Hey One planer, guaranteed any professional shaper would pick....a 3" mini hand plane, for about 15 bucks.
For sure you'll want a sureform.
