Costa Trip

It's my senior year in high school and my mom wants to take a family vacation this summer. I suggested Costa Rica because it would be a lot better than surfing Cocoa all summer. I checked in the archives and most of that information is about "surf trips." Does anyone have suggestions for a family trip with plenty of sightseeing and activities, but also plenty of opportunities for one of the family members to go surfing? Who to book with? Where to stay? etc... Thanks.

Sean,

Costa would be a great trip. One place you could try would be Loma Del Mar.
Your family could rent one of the houses and they have lots of connections for the regular vacation stuff, waterfalls, canopy tours, etc. Plus they are right up the hill from Playa Hermosa for consistent surf. They also take off everyday and go to which ever spot is firing best for the conditions that day. Check'em out at

ticotravel.com

you can get tickets from Miami or Orlando to San Jose for $200 and they can hook you up with accomodations, rental cars, fishing or rainforest trips, etc

I am going at the end of May to Hermosa with Tico Travel.

loma del mar looks cool too. every stinkin day those rovercam pics are overhead and glassy.........

Thanks guys, I'll check into those sites. Any suggestions on what boards to use? Are there good places to rent boards from? I'd rather rent than deal with shipping one of my own.

if you go with tico, you can take two boards in a boardbag for free. build and then take your own!

Making you jealous. I was supposed to be surfing Peru the week after Easter, but instead I'm srfing the net from my couch with a titanium plate in my foot weight for the Doctor to say I can start walking. I figure once I can stand up I can start shaping my first board, a board for my wife to learn on. I figure I'll have 2-3 boards bilt by the time I'm cleared to paddle out again.

As for Costa Rica, we went for our honeymoon in `97. Great place, would love to go back. We hiked, snorkled, sea kiaked, white water river rafting... We had a great time. We did a 1 day bus trip from San Jose to go river rafting on the Pacuare River, see the Tabacon hot springs and Mnt Arenal (near continuous erupting volcano).
We then flew to the Pacific coast (we heard it was a long unpleasant mountain drive). We stayed and hiked in Manuel Antonio national park, walking distance to the beach. We did not surf but saw a number of surfers. Ten next we headed south to Drake's Bay and the Oso Peninsula and the Corcovado National Park. We hiked, snorkled and I borrowed a board from a working at the lodge and surfed for a couple of hours. That was the first time I had surfed in many years. Kind of spooking when your the only one out at an unknown break in the middle of no where. The closest thing to people we saw that afternoon was wild Macaw parots. It would be a great place for a family vacation, and plenty of good surf.

We did all our planning and reservations through the web with an adventure travel company that specialized in Costa Rica. I am sure now, 7 years later, there are a ton of web sites. Do a web search on surfing costa rica and I bet you find a number of travel companies that specialize in surf trips, but will also have plenty to offer your non-surfing family members.

good luck,

Hey, thanks for all the info, some friends of mine and I are planning a Costa trip this summer after we graduate and I guess I don't need to be posting up too much to find out more about the trip. By all accounts, Costa is the place to go, def. can't wait. Thanks
