I want to shape a faithful and accurate copy of the MR 1980 Retro Twin. I see that Blending Curves has an MR-esq template, but I’m not sure how accurate this is.
I’m wondering if anyone out there has the info or could measure up their prized MR board?
I’m looking to do the original dims that he used on his personal board which was 6’2"x20 1/4"x2 1/2 I think.
I would like to know:
Nose and tail widths @ 12"
Width between tail points
Depth of ‘butt crack’
Distance from tail of wings
Depth of wings
Nose and tail rockers (at the ends and 12" in)
Amount of Vee at 12" intervals from the tail
Fin position (distance from tail&rail, cant & toe)
I will probably adjust the thickness and foil to suit my bulk and I can probably get the rails pretty accurate from photos.
I realise that’s quite a Christmas list but any help would be much appreciated.
You could start with the Blending Curves outline and plug you dimensions into that template. There are quite a few pictures around of the original. One of the most discussed and written about surfboard designs in Surfing history. You don’t need a Christmas present, you just need to do a little research. An original board in your possession to copy would be the ultimate, but not likely.
Here’s the entry in the surfresearch.com catalog for the 1978 version. LOTS of vee. They lay out the specs for the fins, too. They don’t have an entry for the version you’re looking for.
I have this exact board at home to repair… only difference is it’s 2 3/4 thick. If you can hold out… i’ll try get everything you want over the weekend.
