Its’ gotten worse. The southbound lane (the outside lane closest to the cliff) has washed away. It won’t be opening anytime soon. We’ve had some historic rains here in the last 48 hours. Cambria ( the first town south of Big Sur received over 11" of rain in the last 48 hours. Rocky Butte ( the hills east of Cambria in the Los Padres forrest) received 15" in the same time period.
Good thing you don’t get hurricanes.
CA would wash away.
How far north of Little Las Vegas(Pico Creek) is the closure?
The slide occurred near Rat Creek about 15 miles south of Big Sur.
Lowell - If you are familiar with the Esalan Institute, the slide occurred about 2 miles south of it.
looking at the latest pics, looks non-repairable, likely require a span bridge…
.
AGREE.
Well - It is repairable in a sense. The last time that this happened a few years ago down near Ragged Point, they repaired it by rerouting the road more into the hillside & a buttressed retaining wall on the outside edge. They also regraded the hill above so that it is less likely to slide i the future.
A friend of mine is a district supervising engineer for CalTrans and they don’t like to build bridges in this situation that close to the hillside. They prefer to have a clear span between two hills.
