I know it can be a real hassle to see your board not look so brand new anymore. I am very cautious of my board and would like it as much as possible to look new always. I know that is too much to ask. Not that my board has turned yellow like a 10 year old board. Far from... i just noticed that its not as white.
I was just wondering, what causes a brand new board to not be as white anymore?? Is it the resin being in contact with UV rays or when the foam is in contact with UV rays?
What can be done to prevent the discoloration? Resin tinting? painting the board white before glassing?
Hope to hear your thoughts. thanks

UV and/or heat. Keep it away from both as much as possible. .
Foam staining the blank white can help too.

thanks for the replies. I was looking for a more technical answer though. Like do the gasses from the foam cause the yellowing or is it the resin thats turning yellow?
Ive been reading that you can add UV blockers into epoxy resin, can this be done for polyester resin? Ive been reading that adding blue pigment to the resin will give it a cool white finish, does this really help cover/ prevent the yellowing?
Supposedly, all poly resins made for surfboard construction have a UV filter additive. It is the foam that turns yellow when your resin has no UV protection. Resin will yellow over time, but not as fast as foam exposed to direct sunlight.
I have three boards with blue tint glass jobs. Only one of them is an obvious blue color. The other two have so little tint that the boards turned yellow, anyway. The whole reason I ordered a tint was to minimize the yellowing. One of the builders said "it sure looked blue, in the cup" when I commented about the faintness of the color.
So, I'd say adding blue pigment only works if you use the right amount. In other words, you need to make it blue, and not expect clear.

That's pretty much it - I've noticed that small fracture dings ( stars) with a very little leakage can really speed up the process, even when well-dried out. I'd suspect that the salt ( powerful ionic stuff there ) acts as a kind of catalyst.
In any event, short of an opaque white pigmented board, I dunno if there's a good way to prevent yellowing from sunlight with anything in the resin. And it's been an ongoing problem as long as urethane foam has been in use. Prolly doesn't help longevity either, as that foam being broken down is the surface foam that the resin is mechanically bonding to, so the glass-foam bond is suffering. Delams tend to come a lot quicker to sunburned boards.
My own solution has been to go with well-padded board bags, where the boards live when they are not either inside on a rack ( and my racks are big enough for the boards in their bags) or else in the water. Also prevents those maddening little garage star dings I mentioned above. Bags these days are fairly cheap.
Sorry I couldn't give you a better answer, hope that helps -
doc...
doc -> thanks for pointing out that a board bag would help prevent the surfboard absorbing UV rays.
SammyA -> I will keep in mind to tint the boards in the future to prevent absorbing the UV rays.
Now, can someone let me know if UV Cure resin helps block out UV rays? When using UV cure resin for shaping, does it help prevent the yellowing of the board? I believe that UV cure resin is alot easier to use when shaping since you dont have to mix different chemicals. can anyone shine some light upon this?
Thanks
You don't use resin of any kind for shaping. It's used for glassing.
And, as I said before, most all surfboard resins sold in retail outlets have a UV stabilizer in them.

Thanks dude.. what i mean was in the shaping process. I know resin is used to glass.
Please do NOT call me "dude". I am an adult.

And I will once again state that resin is NOT used in the shaping process. No resin is used until the shape is finished. You seem confused on this point.
