The Providence Dawn Patrol hosts it’s first inaugural event with 3 amazing surf movies (The Present by Thomas Cambpell, Last Hope by Andrew Kidman and Surf for the Cause by Chuck Kinnane), two amazing wood board shapers (Kevin Cunnighman of Spirare and Mike Booth of Rio del Oso) and a presentation on the evolution of surboard design by RISD profesor Peter Walker. Help us build a community surf film & slideshow to be shown May 9th by sending pics and video (AVI, MP4, FLV, Quicktime under 2 mins) to providencedawnpatrol@gmail.com

MORNING LIGHT

Ironically, in our ever-expanding digital age, grassroots community events are actually on the rise, no doubt given the prevalence of social networking tools like Facebook. But innovative thinkers like Carter Blackwell and Damian Ewens, co-founders of Rhode Island’s Providence Dawn Patrol, deserve credit, too. Blackwell and Ewens hosted their inaugural First Light Surf Family Gathering on May 9th at Providence’s artsy Cable Car Cinema, and even though Facebook surely helped them pack in the stoked spectators, a deep-seated desire to connect the New England surf community via boardbuilding, film, photography, and environmentalism is at the heart of the project. Longtime ESM correspondent and Rhodey mainstay Joe McGovern caught up with Blackwell to get the scoop.
