hey folks wake up, is this anyway to celebrate the holiday?
actually the story of jesus actually might be a good answer to the inital question
christian, jew or persian?
one observation..
take a look at the physical size and location of that place to any other land masses compared to it fellow 49 and then ask yourself now why wouldn't you celebrate their successes over the rest.
trolling for sure..
enjoy the family instead folks and merry christmas to all.
Christmas pretty much invented to by early church to cover over the Druid celebration of the winter solstice ( shortest day in the northern hemisphere and cause for celebration). Not unlike the christian missionaries making the Hawaian people ashamed of their nudity, banishing surfing as 'ungodly', and stealing their land and natural resources. What we now consider 'Christmas' created by the Victorians in Britain in the 19th century.
What the heck? Just give me Bing Crosby and Dean Martin singing Christmas songs and a real fire. Maybe some beer wouldn't go amiss too!!
“It is with considerable diffidence that I attempt to address the American people, knowing and feeling sensibly my incompetency; and believing that your highly and well improved minds would not be well entertained by the address of a Choctaw. But having determined to emigrate west of the Mississippi river this fall, I have thought proper in bidding you farewell to make a few remarks expressive of my views, and the feelings that actuate me on the subject of our removal ... We as Choctaws rather chose to suffer and be free, than live under the degrading influence of laws, which our voice could not be heard in their formation.”

From where I sit, I'm with Honolulu. It is the birthplace of surfing and that in itself exemplify's pride and respect, not to be homogenized.
Guys like Bonga and Lance have entered US surf contests at Malibu in the past haven't they? (even if the later did beat up a non -contestant) so why differentiate at a world contest level? Maybe there's is a tip of the hat thing happening there? Maybe they are just proud to represent the islands and don't want to be grouped under the good ol' USA?
The guy to ask would be Randy Rarick. Doesn't he work tirelessly to organise the pro contests in the islands? not to mention being an all-round great guy.
Wish I was an islander... just surfed my local break with sheet ice in the parking lot and snow on the dunes. Water temps 8 degrees, stiff easterly wind. Lasted less than an hour!
I'll share waves with anyone to be able to surf in boardies and a rashie!!
Thought I recognized you from SF Brian. Sounds like an intellectual snub of intellectuals or pseudo-intellectuals to me. Be nice now...
The OP clearly posted to stir things up.
BTW I find nothing ideological or non-partisan about the Surfing Industrial Complex.

1st century jew... and an enigmatic prophet.

Happy Holidays, as the yanks say.
Ho ho Ho
To me the answer is obvious, as surfers we owe the islanders so much for the gift they have shared, its an acknowledgement of that debt.
Ding! Correct answer.

But what about the blond hair and blue eyes frequently depicted in illustrations and paintings? Must have been a surfer.
Those are definitely the hands of a carpenter.
