Gliders: rails and bottom contours

I’m planning an 11 footer as my next build, and would like to hear opinions on rails and bottom contours for boards in the 11 foot region.

I’ve seen footage and pics of boards in this length range by Skip Frye and Tom Wegener, and the design approaches seem almost opposite.  From what I can tell, Skip Frye’s long boards have fine, fairly pinched rails, going to hard edges in the tail; whereas Tom Wegener’s long boards seem to have quite a lot of meat in them, with up, hot-curl style tails.  Skip Frye’s fins also seem further forward; while Tom Wegener has his fins right on the tail.

Any comments on the different design approaches?  (Especially from those who have built and surfed longer boards.)

Thanks,

Tim

Tim,

To undertand Tom wegener's boards, see the Patagonia Talk and check Nathan Oldfield's movie: Seaworthy.http://tomwegenersurfboards.com/videos-patagonia-series-tom-wegener-surfboards-1998-2009/

I just picked up a 9-8 triple stringer blank from FGH in Ventura. Don’t  know how I can squeeze it in with the bazillion other projects, but I want to build a rounded pintail glider. Single fin or quad, prolly single.

Since I turned 65 I’m gonna start selling off my sub 9 foot boards, and I’m hoping this will become my new daily driver, more like weekly or bi monthly driver.

I kinda want to do a memorial theme for my daughter that I lost 2 years ago, I have some fabric she brought back from when she lived in american samoa that I would like to use as an inlay.

Just thinking out loud, but looking for some inspiration, pics if u got em & care to share. TIA
