Shaun Thomson 7'2 , Looking for Shaper Name and Info??

Hey all,

Just joined up, hello and good day to everyone!

I recently picked up a old Shaun Thomson 7'2 single fin and I am looking for info anyone might have. I cannot see super clear the name on it, it looks like Mike Boman or Mike Bremen? Have searched around with no luck, it also says #206. Appreciate any info on this shaper and or board. Thanks

A pic of the signature will help.

Here it is

Where?

Gotta attach your foto first.

Mike Croteau shaped a lot of the “Shaun Shooters” try to set your lens on machro w/o a flash so we can scrutinize it?

oh sorry, here it is

Well, that rules out Croteau. I think Rusty (when he was at Canyon) also did them. Croteau did them in association with O’neill and I don’t think I ever saw this logo used… it just had the black silhouette version.

you’ve got a good foto of the siggy tho…

Just a hunch, but I think this board is pre-Croteau/O’neill/Shaun Shooter era… most of those were either lite blue or darker blue (at least the ones I saw) around mid 70’s? This outline is less refined than those. Probably 71 to 74 at the  latest.

B something… yet another shaper that got lost in history.

Thanks for the input :)

Shaun Thompson is the correct spelling.

Your board lam say’s “Shaun Tomson Surfboards”   (Just a play of words) No relation to the Famous Legendary Shaun Thompson.

Mike Beamea is a shaper from Huntington Beach and very good pinliner.

The board was made in the 70’s and Mike has built a lot of boards.

Unfortunately I don’t think the board is worth anything?

The outline is not as smooth as what Shaun actually rode.

LOL well thanks for that! Glad I got it for cheap cheap... thank for your info. The pinlines are amazing, cream and sea foam green together. Going to take it out for a spin... always wanted to try an older heavy glassed pintail.

Thanks!

Seems Shaun can’t get his name right on the books he writes either

[edit] Life and career

He was born Shaun Tomshinsky in Durban, South Africa.
As a Jewish athlete, he was inducted into the International Jewish
Sports Hall of Fame in 1995. He learned to surf in the beachbreaks in
and around Durban under the watchful eye of his father Ernie, and
alongside older cousin Michael Tomson.

Shaun attended school in Durban - Clifton Preparatory and Carmel
College. Shaun went on to dominate amateur surfing competition in South
Africa and began venturing over to Hawaii in the late 60’s, courtesy of a
barmitzvah present from his father. It was on one of these trips that
an awestruck 14 year old Tomson eyewitnessed the so-called “Biggest Wave
Ever Known” by Californian Greg Noll at Makaha in 1969. Hawaii’s surf
proved to be a daunting challenge for Shaun, but he continued to mature
and train in South Africa’s hollow waves, such as Cave Rock, the Bay Of
Plenty, and Jeffrey’s Bay.

[edit] Surfing and the Free Ride generation

In 1975, Shaun was an integral part of the “Free Ride” generation.
Along with Australians Rabbit Bartholomew, Mark Richards, Ian Cairns,
Peter Townend and Mark Warren, they rode the infamous waves along Oahu’s
legendary North Shore with a style, aggression, and raw courage unseen
prior to their arrival. Collectively, these surfers changed the face of
surfing and were the first to really apply themselves as serious
professional surfers. With his good looks, eloquence, and undeniable
athleticism, Tomson served by default as the face and voice of this
movement, and he is still viewed as the prototype blueprint for today’s
pro surfer, with legions of fans throughout the world. Tomson won the
highly coveted IPS World Championship in 1977.

On a performance level, Tomson completely changed the way the tube of
the wave was ridden, using a completely unique style of pumping and
weaving through and around collapsing sections of the barrel. Even
today, his electrifying performances at Off The Wall and Backdoor
Pipeline stand the test of time. A very underrated aspect of Tomson’s
inventiveness was his in the tube punch throughs where he escaped
unscathed from hideous closeout sections over a shallow reef.

[edit] Tomson and film

Shaun Tomson has appeared in many films including Free Ride, Fantasea, Many Classic Moments, and In God’s Hands. Tomson also co-produced an award winning full length feature film about the benchmark mid-70’s surfing era called, “Bustin’ Down The Door” which premiered in early 2008.

[edit] Tragedy

The Tomsons’ son Mathew died on April 24, 2006 in Durban, South Africa from an accidental death caused by playing the “choking game.”[2]

Pretty funny read especially when Surfding’s kid is named after Shaun.  My friend’s kid is named Cheyne.  Still Mike Baumea shaped boards for lots of labels including his own “Aggressions” in HB.  He was a great craftsmen back in the day.  Those Shaun Tomson logos floated around the OC; I remember putting a couple on some boards out of Hobie’s , and back then I hadn’t even met him.  Minogna and Shaun’s dad did a great job promoting him.

He did a nice little presentation at a Surfrider function in Avila at the "yacht Club" one nite in the late 90's.  Hung around afterwards and socialized.  Helluva gentleman.  He was  practically a made man in the Oneill family, although he did a stint at Patagonia.  Awesome to watch on a good day at El Cap.  Knew how to find the tube.

That old single will make you put it on rail to turn hard, good for you.  Shaun a made man at O'Neil.  No doubt.

Remember him getting "Jacked" at the con?
