Enjoy.

I’ve
had Mark put a leash plug in the tail so I can ride it standing up but
have been busy with riding all the other boards in my quiver as we’ve
had a great month of swell here and haven’t gotten it back off him.

The idea is to ride it in the fashion seen in the Bing family tree vid…

Here’s a Dick Van Straalen take on one…

Ive got a few Malaroo, most have been seen before but its not a bad idea to see who else will contribute..

Heres some of mine from the past 5 years.

I went thru a hydrofoil stage where I added different foils to a standard bodyboard...

Firstly Cuttlefish

I went through all lthose links and I am absolutely amazed at your backgpund with the Paipo’s … I found the bits when you guys were looking for the elusive malaroo, just a rumour then, there had been sightings, good old Bob Green found me sitting on the rock lounge at Bawley Point. He came down and we had three days together. Fantastic to associate with someone like that. Thanks for the links, that was like winning a flight in a rocket and flying around the solar system and going, bugger it I’vegot the fuel , I’m going to anothger solar system. Fantastic stuff. I didn’t know most of that existed.

Surfoils

Wow what can I say, that’s amazing, absolutely amazing … can’t wait to meet you

I don’t know what you guys know about me, but in a nutshell, I shaped a bellyboard in 1994 out of a broken “PALM” (the brand) kneeboard. shaped it as a bit of play thing, didn’t take it serious. As time went on I found myself having more fun on that than my stand ups. Realty was I became a bellyboarder although a madkeen standup rider. Getting better tubes, getting a lot more out of smaller waves, making an evening session at Avalon a fun thing to look forward to no matter what the conditions were.

In 2004 while living at Bawley Point I discovered my interpretation of surfboard geometry and made a range of surfboards for a living including a bellyboards. The belly boards were the most popular model in my range, largely due to David and Dianne Guy who bought one each and became obsessed with them and just kept arranging sales. People would talk to them on the beach. Dianes has the only quad malaroo that I made and to see her ride that was one of the happiest things for me. Its a rocket, but even David has not been allowed to ride it to this day.

Ok I’ll put together a post on the malaroo boards, learn’t  a lot developing them.

Do you guys want to tell us about the boards, cuttlefish, How much typing do you want to do, Anything you want to say will be interesting, and Surfoils, what is your favourite out of all of those and why.

Malaroo, whatever board is under construction is always the favourite because each one is a progression on lessons learned.

As each new board has an element of something new that Im testing so theres always an element of risk in how to build it,

how will it ride,

what will I learn and

where will that knowledge take my understanding to conjure up the next board.

The first foil-board had hard cold and quite sharp aluminium foils and the first wave on them was both scary on the paddle out and then totally exhilerating once Id taken off and found that I could successfully, and quite easily plane and turn on them. Id taken the leap and broken free from the mindset that you need a finely contoured hull with composite fins and balanced rails.

Anything was possible from then on.

Its been in the surf for a few weeks now but Ive got a sleeker version in mind that makes the first one look chunky.

its funny how you agonise over a build and then take a massive leap in design with the next version.

I'll send a few pics to you and Malaroo and see what you think.

What a moment, how great that all the things wev’e seen you have made and tested. I’ve only dreamed about a lot of those. This flying vee … that your working on, I’ve had a similar image in my mind just in the last few days, it started with a thought that the wave is beside me, why not get a fin into the wall beside me, then a thought of fins sticking out of the board and how ridicul;ous that is and the the idea of extending a wing into the wall and then getting that back behind me where the wave us throwing over and then making that symetrical like a vee and then stick a fin, probably 2 axis horizontal + vertical out into the zone … those side wings of your flying vee in the wall could change the history of surfing, Has someone else made one?

Is this the beginning of the transom cross-beam and thin, air cell (between two skins) for the bottom we discussed in your New Surfcraft Species thread?

Been waiting to see that one…

Definitely.  Please send me a few pics.

Do you still have my email address?

Ive sent Pms with pics to both of you guys but Ben Chipper tells me PMs cant contain pics....?  Let me know if this is true and I'll email them to you .

Yep.  Got the pics.  Interesting…

PMed a question.

Go tthe pics via PM.

Thanks for that guys.

Malaroo, are you showing more pics..?

yes , malaroo, please can you post some more pics , of your paipos / bellyboards , and FIN setup[s] ?  cheers mate !

well, Brett , I still can't figure the photos in pm thing [ I'm still just getting 'links' to you eh ?]

but ....

....emails work for me !

Also ....

  there's always " facebook " , of course !

cheers !

I’m thinking what to show and whats not approriate. Let me digest whats right. I think this post is so fascinating thanks to what you guys have posted, its getting a lot of hits, probably because of all those great pics. I dont want it to become a malaroo geometry site. Bgsurfer love the board, doing well for a big kid, I ride a skatey a lot, always have. I’m 55 fat and ugly.

Malaroo, dont worry about not posting your geometry ideas or whats appropriate, ...

This IS the thread about prone craft, so bring it on I reckon !

Im keen to learn what you know, especially if its about maths and geometry.

OK, i’m on the case

John,

I'll try to get a family photo. From Hawaii, there are John Galera Nofin, a Paul Lindbergh Hawaii Paipo Design and boards based on designs by Larry Goddard (shaped by Chris Garrett of Oz). A Surfoils paipo, some homemade paulownia boards and a Tom Wegener alaia round things out.

I like to ride finless but Larry's boards were designed with fins, so I have been doing some experimenting with fins courtesy of Huie (more on this later). Less bouyancy and speed are what I am interested in at present. On the paipo site there are photos of an interesting looking hull.

For more info on John, Paul or Larry, Malaroo & others - see http://mypaipoboards.org/interviews/

Bob

surfoils, I'm going to wear you out, but I know people want to know,
Can you tell us what you want about this board?
