My scanner is down so excuse the pic of a pic but here I am with one of Roy's boards in 1995, Yokohama, Japan. Roy was into wood composites before it was cool...
Even back then Roy was living a fairly feral life, travelling around NZ in buses and whatnot so I suspect he had a much longer beard than I! He hooked me up with a custom wetsuit as well, since off the rack sizing in Japan wasn't working (now we can get custom in Japan as well, of course). I was 27 in those pics (44 now) and though I don't know for sure, I always pictured Roy as being about ten years older than I am?
I think he wrote once that he was a 1961 birth ... which makes him 51 [same as me]
[he just looks older , 'cos of the beard and the moses robes , perhaps ?! :) ]
cheers !

p.s. -
he is still around .... for anyone interested , he is on "Facebook" [as is 'Hicksy', too ! ] . Roy still puts up photos of his boards and fins there , from time to time.
Roy is a regular on the Tree-to-Sea wood surfboard forum, and also keeps up with what's going on here on Swaylocks. And a few other surfboard forums as well.

do you still have this board?!
contemporary valuations place it in the neighborhood of $120,000 to $145,000.
There definitely is something to be said about marching to the beat of your own drum!

I've always joked that Jesus would have ridden a single fin! HAHA!
I would love to meet him someday.
Just to pick his mind.
I'm sure he's a kick!
