it seems that there are those on here that take offence in my honest assement of some threads and take offence
at remarks that to them are cryptic when in the cold hard light of day it is just saying it as it is.
why is this happening?
too many that know so little'' trying to say too much
the archives are being absolutely ignored, same quesstions over and over?
for the composite nut jobs:
seek bert burgers threads (firewire payed big money for berts thoughts)
epoxy freaks:
seek greg loehr's stuff including (the w m d thread)
jim phillips
shaper and listen to what he says
the professer good technical stuff from him
bill barnfeild
these are the right information
cheers huie
I agree Huie. I have gleaned a bunch of information from the archives which I search before I pose questions. The fact is many people do not take the time to look first, so questions are repeated without need. I know some people bump threads that are valuable sources of information and this is nice to see. The other day Mike Daniel was searching for some of his own tips on planer use but could not find the thread. He had to take time to write his thoughts down again. This was nice of him to do this but it should be easier to access the gems. Would it be possible to have a top 15 all time list for threads which contain the best discussions on varied topics. This may help...just sayin'
the archives are being absolutly ignored same quesstions over and over?
Been that way ever since I got here,,,, ignored archives and spelling. LOL
I think we are all guilty at sometime or another.
I agree on the "How to", view only thread,,, we choose what goes in it and noboby can reply to it, read only.
Ken & Huie,
Firstly, if you don't want to know the answer- don't ask the question. And if your knickers get in a twist because of constructive criticism or one gets an answer they didn't want- oh well.
The archives issue; I'm a very new newbee. Iv'e had a couple questions. Lads have been gracious and patient enough with me to answer all in great detail. I'm guilty of not going to archives straight away. But when I did I was overwhelmed by the information gathered. One query I had is in the archives. There are over 300 entries. After 25 pages I was seeing double and was getting a lil discouraged. So I can see why redunant questions are sasked. But saying that, in the future I will try archives. I'll archive because that's the system. But after a honest attempt without success- I will ask in a forum. Sometimes it takes a learner a few sessions on how the system run. I'm a prime example of one getting aroung this site- Sometimes it's not easy. In time it will be. I haven't given you a solution just excuses that may or may not help.

There's an FAQ thread at the top that should be used more. But it's inevitable that it can't cover everything, so some of the same questions do get asked over and over in different forms. And the same half-baked ideas (garage-made pu blanks, aluminum surfboards, etc) get advanced over and over.
huie, you just keep calling 'em like you see 'em. It's a dirty job, but somebody's got to do it...
[email protected]
Yeah... search the archives and hope like hell the main subject line is spelled correctly. In Bert Burger's historical thread on vacuum bagging for instance, the word vacuum is spelled vacumn. Check it out anyway. There is a ton of information. We should be charged an access fee for it... http://www2.swaylocks.com/node/1012644
Also.... Public thanks to Huie for damn good information he has shared privately on many occasions.
everytime Ive talked to huei he gives insightful and helpful information, yes he is truthful to the point of pocking you in the eye with a blunt stick, but he gets his point across. If people have trouble with that they need to look at themselves and why rather that call huei a rude grumpy prick. As for understanding, huei is huei, just as roy is roy, he understands, and some people deserve his answers, while others should look between the lines and dwell on what is said before rushing to a judgemental conclusion, one day the light globe will turn on inside their head
freedom from the system does not need to be a dream, it is out there for those who want to truly find it.
We should ban Roy again.
bahahah, you mean that roy isnt banned anymore??? Let the fun begin, roy where are you mate... By the way I cunt spell for shite either.

Now I can see that 90 percent is golden and the rest is to put the train back on the track.
+ I cunt spell worth a dam too!!

Whats the big deal about spelling?
Huge amount of info on here if you look most stuff in the archives is easyer to find with google than the search box above.
Reading between the lines helps here and reading topics completly unrelated to what you wanted to know as so many go way off topic.
Keep it up Huie can't be expected to walk everyone of us though everything you know step by step.
If people don't use the archives first , it means they don't want the info bad enough.....or maybe some enjoy an arguement more than building a better board?........(lol).......Huie belongs to the small percentage on this forum that have absolutely nothing left to prove to anyone..........the rest of us should appreciate the valuable technical information.......however it's delivered.

Hey Huie, I don't know who you are, but I think you add an important perspective to Swaylocks.
I think you're saying what you think is true or correct is the right thing to do. People don't have to like what you say, or agree with it. If they know better than great but I'd bet you've seen more and done more than most of us.
Don't ever stop doing what you've been doing here on Sways. We'd be way worse off without your comments.
I'm ok with Huie....I thinks he makes this place more fun. GhettoRat too.....
maybe Seinor Swaylock's members could offer links to good threads ...like this one...

.....hey....I sold a few used Stingray boards this year...after I beat the crap out of them. Needed the space not the money.
When I type the word Epoxy into the General Discussion search box I get this thread.....

Don't even think about becoming nice Huie. Just be yourself............honesty is a good thing.
Stingray...shameless self promotion.
Thanks Shamelessray you make things enjoyable around here with your selfless "ha" promotion of the now world famous "low tech lab," and I am glad your selling a few of your boards so you can get busy and make some more. I consider it a priviledge, and an honor to tweek the Meek, as you will understand, but most won't.
As for Huie, well I can say, he makes me read his stuff over and over because the first time, or even the third sometimes I don't get it, and then I go whoa, how did I miss that, he gets it, I mean he's already got it; I got to do the same thing with the Ambrose stuff too; I can't just speed read those guys stuff or I miss the valuable lesson.
And as for those guys that Huie mentioned their all full of sh!t, the kind that doesn't stink. But as my friend close friend Rick Grant always tells me "I ain't a scared of you," or "[email protected]#k you, ghettorat."
It's good to go back and read the WMD compsand thread, Greg was frothing so hard!!
beachmaster brian has spoken. dont do sideways!!!!
Hi Huie,
Only because you asked in a public forum, I'll answer you publicly. Otherwise, it is like airing dirty laundry in front of the neighbors. You and I have had our battles, so I have a little insight in the matter.
First, let me start by saying that you are probably one of the most knowledgeable builders here on sways. Everyone here respects that.
Most of us here think that Sways was set up as a place to talk about making boards, and sharing ideas. There isn't anything saying that a member must have so many years experience, or have worked for so many years before they can join.
So when a member gets shut down for saying their view on something, their feathers get ruffled. Nobody likes to be told, "they aren't good enough". If someone posts something wrong, correction is always welcome. Calling them an idiot, or the equivalent, with no explanation of what they got wrong, just "they don't know anything" isn't welcome.
The "cryptic" comments come when a hint is given, but no detail or useful information as to the right direction. "Use the Archives" is a first step. But it is better to add in search for "Polishing" or maybe just a little tip like start at 120 grit. But a comment like, "I know how to polish because I've done it for decades, and you are doing it wrong, and you don't have any idea what you are doing...." just hurts the feelings of whoever just got spanked.
A little off the topic, but another thread here was from a poster, well respected, and a pro in the industry. That poster had a long thread about a certain design of board they were producing. I read pages and pages of "It is the best board you will ever ride", "So and So was ripping on it yesterday", "Here are some pictures of the board being ridden". But when ever someone asked a question, the answers were vague, and secrets were kept. The Thread eventually was labeled as advertising, and moved to the advertising forum. This poster was a little upset, and commented that they had shared so much, and that everyone was jealous of his special board. And that they were done sharing, because we were all so ungrateful. No, really what happened was that after dozens of pages of "Look at me, look at me", some got tired of it, and started complaining to the Mods, who had it moved. Just for the record, I wasn't one of the ones who complained, and wanted it moved, I just saw it for what it was, and stopped reading it. So this goes back to my point. A helpful hint is always appreciated, whispering secrets isn't.
Think of it as a parent to their child. Since you are respected for your experience and knowledge, you are looked on as one of our elders. So when a parent corrects their child, or an employer to their employee, telling them to go figure it out, or telling them to go get stuffed, or something similar, just isn't kind. Instead, telling them what thay did wrong, and how to do it better next time is appreciated.
And lastly, nobody is forced to come on to Sways. If there is some trade secret, that needs to be kept quiet, then fine, keep it quiet. I myself am working on a few ideas, that at least for now, I'm keeping to myself. So I respect not saying anything.
Some have spent a lifetime working their craft. Some are just starting out. But it is a big playground where all skill levels are found.
Am I being a dick again?

I looked, and I didn't see any rules for this site that said you had to tell everybody everything about anything. Surfboards are a composite product (well, most of them are), and proprietary techniques and uses of materials are the rule in that industry. Either that or come up with something that's so capital-intensive that no one wants to compete, or patent-protect and hire lots of lawyers.
Happy Halloween everyone, we'll have a nice trick-or-treat for the whole industry very soon...
Is that cryptic enough??
[email protected]
Just my 2 cents...
There's always more than one way to do something, and your way may not be as easy for others to learn or get wired. It may not be the fastest way either.
In 1980, when John Lennon was shot by a guy living in Hawaii the big time TV companies came to Honolulu and did a bunch os news stories. We are 6 hours behind New York time, so we have to have things done before 2pm to get it on the 6pm news in NY. I was assigned to work with the NBC crews because I was pretty quick at doing what we do. Well we had about 30 minutes to edit a piece and have it sent by satelite back to NY for the 6pm show and it had the big time NY producer stressed out. I was a 22 year old kid in Hawaii using less than state of the art equipment, and he kep telling how to do my work. I had to keep telling him I knew what I was doing and we would be fine. We made the show even after having problems getting the satelite link to work, and after things calmed down he told me if I ever wanted to go to the big leagues, I could work for him. He never saw anyone do things the way I did, and didn't think I knew what I was doing, but I did and I knew we would be OK.
For many making surfboards is how they get enough money to live. For others, it's a hobby or just something they do well, but not the bread and butter occupation. Then there's those who are just starting out but want to make this a full time occupation.
One of the problems I've seen in the jobs I've had is that the newer people will use the knowledge the older workers share with them to take away work. Problem is that these newbies don't know all the things that can, and often do, go wrong and before they know it are in a bind. Then the experienced workers have to bail out the a-hole who just tried to F-um up. Before long the whole idea of helping the next generation goes to hell because of this behavior. It's happened to me more than a few times, and I've seen it happen quite a bit to others.
No one has to tell you the trade secrets they've learned over the past 20, 40, 60 years. The cool ones will often give you a little treat, but they don't have too. I'd be really pissed if I was an old pro with a solid client base and saw one of my so called students go out and try to F-me up by taking my clients. But, it happens all the time. The young buck always goes after the old bull. I guess we are still animals and not truly intelligent beings.
If you think you have a great tip and want to share it, great. Be thankful that every now and then a great piece of knowledge is passed on from someone who really knows what he or she is talking about.
Full appologies Mickp we didn't know you were such a legend, what with all the help you've brought to the forum, pictures posted, engaging in good discussion. I think this was your third post on the forum, how is your boogie boarding going these days?
MickP Quote
''i was standing on boogs 16 years ago. i claimed a new design was only a few years away. all i did was imagine and sketch a few ideas.
i saw the alaias come into vogue. it brought a tear to my eye imagining what was possible. i talked up my finless intentions,(somthing like a slightly narrower & longer boog) but never shaped one...
i am about to shape another 6´1'' rounded pin. 2'' shorter, 1/8th thicker and 1/2'' wider then what the 90s dictated. i guess $s and laziness are in equal parts my excuse...'' That will be something new and different, maybe you should put a patient on it??
LOL! see, spelling doesn't matter at all.
I don't know why you guys always want to hang shit on the old blokes or anyone who has a business and is making a living out of this industry, it's a disincentive for other knowlageable people to join...or come back.
Then you'll be left with a hollow forum where you can all discuss how to make a plastic boogie board on the cheap, plaining a piece of 4x2 instead of a blank, sanding a board with a 5'' random orbital, making a rocker template with a piece of string and a 100' driveway, making blanks from construction eps stolen from the side of the road, making a fin out of paper mache and other things that have nothing to do with board building like going for a surf with your mate/buddy/bro/bru/chap, travel spots, cars, girls, the weather...

Oh wow, I make boards with construction grade EPS, and I use a 5" orbital sander. I guess I don't know how to do things right. I think you meant to write 100' driveway, not 100" driveway.
Hah, no offense taken. I'd never make it in the industry, I ride my boards before they're done. Never finish them completely. My boards are for me or my brother to ride. When I'm done with it I give it away to someone I think deserves a board.
I'd love to see everyone riding boards they make themselves. Be interesting. I'd love to see everyone riding boards they make themselves and no leashes. That would be something. 5 people on the outside. That would be great.

downrail version of the boards that changed the world?
(with some other tweaks as well)
[email protected]
Ha Huie, I was going to send you a PM about making a 7' version of the Evolution style boards that Wayne Lynch was riding. I had it all typed and then decided not to send it to you. Your photos kinda gives me an idea of what you mighht have said.
My questions were more about making the older style pinched rails on something that would probably be 7' x 21 1/2 or 22" x 3". Seems like the board they were riding were thinned out quite a bit at the rails.
I have 2 boards that are similar to what you show in the photos. One was made by Keone Downing quite a while ago 6' x 20" x 2 1/2", the other I did earlier this year, 6-4 x 19 1/2" x 2 3/4". Both have flat decks, but the downing is thinner, so it carries the flat all the way out to the rail. Mine looks similar to yours, but no rail channels.
shark i have just about got a reproduction 7' 6'' from one of our originals finished
these boards were first shaped by kevin platt but wayne rode these boards like no other the evoulution ones are a bit more hip all these boards had 50- 50 rails with taper belly roll i will take plenty pics and post them but i am a week or so before i can get to it.

Huie, you got me inspired to hack foam, so yesterday I busted out my last PU blank, a 6-1 HTM fish reject from Bennet. I shaped me a double ender 5'11" x 21" x 2 5/8". The blank had bubbles on the bottom, but I didn't want to make it any thinner, so I glassed it. Got the top hot coated and I just need to hot coat the bottom, add fins or boxes and finish it up.
Even though it's an egg, I'm thinking of calling it a swallow tailed gun, in honor of all the people here that make short round tail boards and call them fish. Hell why can't I call a 5'11" X 21" a gun?
I'll shoot some photos later.
