Hi Huie - the archives have loads of good information, but it doesn't always come up when you look. Mis-spelling is fine, who cares, except if the person looking through the archives spells his search words right, then the mis-spelled words don't come up, as Mr Mellor pointed out. (Which is one of the reasons I often take the time to correct the spelling on your posts. Like when you write Greg Lohar, and I change it to Greg Loehr.)
Sometimes its just easier for people to ask again - and thats allowed. Those who don't want to answer again and again don't have to. You post a lot of good information, and build beautiful boards, you have posted good information in the past, as have the others you mention. If someone doesn't want to take the time to learn what has been posted, it is their loss.
If any thread turns into more insults than information, it gets sent to errors and bugs, no favoritism, it doesn't matter who is giving or getting the insults. A thread full of insults is not what "general discussion" is about.
I have read the Bert Burger thread, several times. Its kinda hard to follow now, with all the missing pictures, but I still did enjoy what I could glean from it.
Let 'em ride Mr. Mod........let it go.....get over it.
I was trying to be helpful and GhettoRat got under my skin....(took me over 30 min to search for the thread today).....after a few pm's it ends up Ghetto and I have several mutal friends.....we agree on most issues and have several other things in common....we just have a different style.
All of the information is here, contained within these 1's and 0's, getting to it is a different story. If every n00b with a snapped nose, broken fin, sanding problem, or glass job that won't harden meticulously scoured all the available threads and archives pulling out the bits and pieces of information for the right fix, well then the post count, as low as it is, would drop even lower, then there would be less need to check the site, then days turn to weeks to years and the next thing you know, swaylocks is a ghost town haunted by the disinterested enthusiasts that once were, perhaps the site even drops offline as why would anyone want to continue maintaining and paying to host a site that gets no traffic or activity?
Perhaps a better alternative is to simply ignore the question if you don't care to answer. No single poster or group of posters will shape human nature and human nature dictates that people want answers quickly and most think that their question is just different enough to garner a new set of answers. Questions will get asked, over and over again. Threads bitching about those questions will get posted again and again. Perhaps we all need to get over it and understand this site is about the hobby of building surfboards for a very small subsect of society that chooses to do things for themselves rather than mindlessly consume.
Perspective.
"What's wrong honey? Why are you so upset today?" "Because someone asked the same fucking question about how to fix a sand through that's been asked and answered a hundred times. Why don't they fucking learn?"...perspective.
Mods need to stop editing other people's words no matter how helpful the think they are being. I believe moderaters should take it upon themselves to get rid of spam and if they have the inkling they could take it upon themselves to organise the forum or even update the swaylopedia section with viable frequently asked info that would easily be linked over to newb threads. Having a silly amount of mods as this forum does would make the man power to do so....right?
...well, I do not know the real problem with those threads, but I said this long time ago: if send all the newbies to look on the archives, a link will broke up and no more "chatting" will occur on the general forum.
Hey Doyle, for the quantity of your post seems that you do not participate too much here; also, that do not contribute much at all...
-I have no problem trying to help newbies; I m enthusiast to try to maintain the techniques REAL, no guessing in my responses; all tested and long time proved or used in the industry.
I have several pictures of different steps of the process and complete surfboards here in the threads, also some in closer details. Some members saw or have my work with them; and I m in this forum since (2001) almost the beginning, so all would take the information I can share with a "base".
I see several posters that only talking and never see any thing made by them...and sometimes when you see it, well, the product do not show the best (included CNC guys...) and be careful: if do not look right in a picture, is that live have several flaws.
And don't use a shirt of a banned guy as a prop... Turns out many think it's not funny, and a personal attack on one who can not defend himself... Ooopps. I'll keep future humor attempts based on myself.

oh its true it is political correctness gone mad
oh and make sure you get your spell //ing correct or that will get the treatment as well
Yea, I agree that the moderators stepped over the line on this on. Not sending it to errors and bugs, but deleting it entirely. Huie asked a question, with the goal of self improvement, He got a lot of support. I even went so far as to call him one of the best posters up here, and a Swaylocks legend.
I saw nothing that crossed a line, and it wasn't getting very heated at all.
I think that this is a case of a few taking more power than they should have, and controlling what they don't have the right to control.
My post on the deleted thread was a thoughtful response to huie's question. I probably spent half an hour making sure I got my point across, without crossing any lines. To have someone else become the overlord and delete the entire thread was wrong.
Doyle made a great post, that if it weren't for a lot of new posters asking the same question again, this place would become a ghost town.
But If too much control is exercised by the moderators, and they start editing and deleting poststhat most don't find offensive, I for one will quickly stop posting at all!
During the moderators election, the newly elected moderators said they would tread very lightly, and only step in if the posts got really personal in an ugly way. Stick with what you promised.
Put back Huie's thread. He is one of the most respected elders here, and it was disrespectful to him to take it down, as well as disrespectful to everyone who posted, and especially those who tried to cheer him up
Everysurfer, you were hoping that your pal Huck was going to ban me because you didn't like what I said, and now your mister anti-moderator, what has brought such a change? People should be allowed to say pretty much anything they want around here especially when they can back it up.
This place does best when there is a bit of contriversy. We need an Australian moderator, and I vote for Huie.
Grat, my only problem with you is your lack of tact. I haven't changed.
Despite Your's and Huie's postings, I have never called for your or anyone's banning. Other than spam posters, and outright threats of violence, no one should be banned. And if I did call for anyone's banning, I really don't think any moderators would listen to me anyway. We are all big boys here, and other than a few instances, we can take care of ourselves.
In this instance, I think a moderator screwed up. Giving them the benefit of the doubt, I don't think thay ment any harm, but their sensabilities are their own, and shouldn't be applied to everyone else. They should put the deleted thread back to general discussion, and if it does get too ugly, then to Errors and Bugs. A policy of complete deletion isn't what I come here for.
Hopefully the moderator who acted will see they went to far and put Huie's post back up.
The only request I have made to the moderators was when a member's post is just outright slander or disruption, the slander or disruption should be edited out. Example, in the Cerex thread, a few members added nothing to the conversation, but were like little kids throwing rocks, just trying to get the conversation distracted. I did ask for the moderators to delete the pure disruption, but never to erase someone's post just because it was disagreeable.
And you are right, if they can back it up, say what they will. And speaking of which, I still haven't seen anything you have made yet.

And you should have never been such a whiner to call for "your" thread to be removed, when nobody called you any names, I just said I did it years ago, and the stuff GM uses is because of my research, and development; not bragging, just stating the facts. Still its fun to argue with you, because you think you know more and have done more than me.
If you guys are talking about the Honesty thread it got moved to the Swaylocks Surfshop?? So if you would like to purchase some honesty around here that's where to go?? I'd like a 100 yard roll of honesty, a pail of unanimity and have you got anything that will cure spelling and grammar?

"I have a feeling Roy would find the shirt funny..."
Roy has the shirt...I sent him one...HE LOVES IT...!!!...
Regarding attacking someone who can't defend himself (AKA: Roy), it's why I quit being a moderator...I locked a tread that was just that, and another Mod, opened it up again because he hated Roy that much......Not fair, unless you are a bully...Right, Keith...???...Adults should know better...
A moderator posted that he did edit posts. One edited post was by Bill Thrailkill, that the moderator said he edited because it had a comment that wasn't nice.
A moderator also said he edited spelling errors.
I think if a moderator edits something, the moderator should say what was changed. Other wise the moderator just put words in another posters mouth. A form of libel I believe.
Even more so, some of the posts locked in errors and bugs shouldn't be locked there. I have no problem with a moderator deleting obscene profanity or slander, but to take action when only a disagreement is going on is over the top.
Moderators' role, and responsibilities, are pretty well known and understood throughout the internet.
personal-computer-tutor.com says "The moderators of a Forum should have the final decision as to what constitutes an infringement of the rules as well as the responsibility to remove, edit, move or close those posts that they see as being harmful to a forum."
Wikipedia explains "Essentially, it is the duty of the moderator to manage the day-to-day affairs of a forum or board as it applies to the stream of user contributions and interactions.
"Common privileges of moderators include: deleting, merging, moving, and splitting of posts and threads, locking, renaming, stickying of threads, banning, suspending, unsuspending, unbanning, warning the members, or adding, editing, removing the polls of threads."
wisegeek.com says "A forum moderator oversees the communication activity of an Internet forum. He monitors the interchange of contributors and makes decisions regarding content and the direction of threads. Moving discussions from one section to another to keep topics organized is also a common job for a forum moderator.
"If the tone of a forum becomes hostile or starts to move in the direction of personal attacks, the forum moderator usually has the discretion to lock the discussion to prevent heated, interchanges. He may also be able to hide discussions he deems unworthy of further discussion. Conversely, topics he feels deserve further examination can be posted indefinitely by the moderator even if they garner no comments.
"...forum moderators are also responsible for maintaining the integrity of the forum in other ways. This requires knowledge of HTML and acuity at moving, merging, adding, and deleting text, graphics, and links. Contributors will often ask moderators to assist them with technical problems with site access and posting.
"Supplementary duties of a forum moderator may include relocating discussions to more appropriate sections, closing or locking threads based on dwindling interest or lack of recent activity, editing posts for clarity or content, and deleting threads. Thread deletion can either be temporary or permanent, depending on the wishes of the forum moderator.
"If an abusive contributor refuses to cease unacceptable behavior, the forum moderator usually has the discretion to ban the user. If the offender continues to post and eludes the ban, the moderator may opt to access the user's IP address. This enables the moderator to ban the address instead of banning the user by name or email address.
What happens when a forum has 7 moderators , and one is driving on the wrong side of the road?
If you are aware of a serious problem and know (or suspect) who the source is, the first thing to do is to approach them by pm, it might just be a misunderstanding - i.e., what is considered the "wrong side of the road" in Australia might just be the right side of the road in another country - sometimes its just a matter of perspective. =)
If you have already done this, to no avail, then you could contact myself or any of the other moderators with your proof that there is a problem, and explain why your pm's failed to resolve it. We don't really get involved in personal disputes between posters, but as regards the forum itself, we are here to help out where we can.
In some ways Fredrick Jackson Turner's famous thesis from the 1890's on "The Closing of the American Frontier," sums up your wisdom here, for the ability to go west and do it one's own way factored heavily into what it means to be an American. Sadly the paradigm of too much land, and too little labor has shifted and I will argue is now affecting the American psyche. Amongst American Historians at the time is caused an uproar, for he took the census data from 1890 and based his belief upon the population density of the US exceeding one person per square mile- imagine that. Perhaps in this brave new world a new thesis should be written on the closing of the American mind.

I heard that the American spirit was wild and free and kept moving west to stay that way. Then they got to California and there was no place left to go and they all went crazy.
I asked Huck to move the politics thread yesterday. He said he was deferring to the other "moderators" and would not. Apparently related to the grief he has received for doing a decent job of what he volunteered to do. Just before he was elected, thread hijacks and disruption had reached unacceptable levels.
I do not know who moved it. Ironically, the thread was moved a very few minutes (30-60 seconds?) after I made my first "political" post. Imagine that. Apparently my "objective" post was more offensive than several "subjective" posts combined.
It seems, I am not a member of the 1%.
I have been on at least one forum where a couple of members were allowed to post unchecked. It was a healthy forum until that time. Interactive dialogue ceased. Within several months, the forum had dried up.
It seems your lyrical prose has not been affected No. 3, even with its occasional toxins.
Like it or not, moderation is a necessary evil on internet forums ...
the archives are being absolutely ignored, same quesstions over and over?

Hi Huie - the archives have loads of good information, but it doesn't always come up when you look. mybe i will try to night read the honesty thread huck you know who the stirrers are
and mybe not to many read this so i will repeat
and the 11 line bucketing of bruce fowler is something i condem right there you are way out of line
and both his thread and the COIL thread have a right to be here on general discusion
good thing you and one or two other self elects were not here when bert done a good pr job but left sways much more enlightened
general discussion is where the daily fix is instead of sending those that try to stay alive to the sin bin? open it up more

Herein lies all the answers which you seek.
I have read the Bert Burger thread, several times. Its kinda hard to follow now, with all the missing pictures, but I still did enjoy what I could glean from it.
Bert got as much from this place as he gave. If not more...
I agree with Huie, those 2 threads should be here on the front page but, it's not my website.
Regarding searching for those who don't already know:
1) go to google.com
2) type in the words that you want to search for on swaylocks. you can even type in the name of the person who said what you are looking for.
3) directly after your search terms put a space then put "site:swaylocks.com"
4) click the google search button.
5) the all mighty google will search only on swaylocks for your search terms.
It works HEAPS better than the Swaylocks search function.

Hmmm I thought it was about the one moved to bugs and errors... There was one that completley disapeared??? Now I feel left out too... Ha!

When you start editing other peoples post without permission the entire site looses credibility. What a load of BS! Mike
Do we know that moderators editied or deleted anything?
I guess we couldn't have proof, unless someone has "screen shots" of the deleted stuff...
Pretty fucking weird for an internet place talking about surfboards... But, I still like it! ;-)
TaylorO
Yes Taylor,
A moderator posted that he did edit posts.
So who moderates the moderators?
I have a friend who surfed a spot
he loved it so he called it paradise
he went so far as to call it pat's
paradise was 'discovered' by a
tight band of enthusiasts...
he changed his refrence term
for the spot to milton's to refer
in english literature to a book
titled'' Paradise Lost''.

What happens when a forum has 7 moderators , and one is driving on the wrong side of the road?
http://www.currumbinwoodworks.com.au/

Then they got to California and there was no place left to go and they all went crazy.

long live the politix thread.
ambrose M. curry III
