So many have died for the values and freedoms that are embodied in our founding documents, and now with a major election looming there are those who say anything political doesn't belong here. I had a black-homosexual drama professor years ago, that emphasized "everything is political" and while we never saw eye to eye on the homo thing, he was right about the political part. "You have to ask yourself are you part of the status quo or are you part of the solution,'' he would say every class. I just wanted to know the thoughts of the brothers, and sisters on who they prefer Obama, or Romney. Its sad that some around here lack the maturity to even talk about it.
Rectal caranial submersion runs rampid in the world
I'm as guilty as anyone for getting involved with political threads on a surfing forum but I never start them. IMO politics serves to divide us and distract us from the common interests we share here, so a no-politics rule (if there is one here) doesn't bother me one little bit.
We have more than enough internal politics in going on in surfing and surfboard building. If people are that intent on choosing sides and getting into heated arguments with the mutual exchange of personal insults I think there's still plenty of opportunity to be had here for that. Meanwhile, I prefer to remember that a 2-party system will inevitably result in an electorate that is more or less divided down the middle. That being the case, it's hard to say 50% of everyone is crazy and unreasonable because it's apparent they can't be.
Not to mention the fact that our group includes a lot of people who live in other nations with other political systems, and any time one of them ventures an opinion it's just too common to get a "mind your own business" rebuke in exchange.
I'd rather see more of "us" and less of "us-vs-them" on Sways. Nevertheless, I am a guest on this form and one of the bastard stepchildren among surfboard builders so I shall yield to whichever direction the tribe chooses on this.
Simple explanantion-
"Swaylock's SURFBOARD DESIGN FORUM"
If you want politics go to SurferMag.com "General Discussion" forum. You can discuss politics to your hearts content there.
but jeff you posted in there?

I don't know what to say! I'm dumbfounded! I never thought it would happen!
I agree with ghettorat!
I just looked again at the political thread. Nobody got out of line, so why was it deleted? Plenty of other threads on non surfing specific subjects have gone on here. Occasionally even a moderator has posted something non surf specific. I remember it was just something they found interesting?
How about a policy, if something being politely discussed by long standing members, it is just left alone.
Way too much policing going on here lately. We are all big boys. A little more respect of the members would be appreciated.
Am I being a dick again?
I was finding the thread interesting I live on the other side of tge world so don't have any thing to do with it. I do feel its important to be able to talk about your political views with others especialy those who think differently. Often it help you see that really most people want the same thing. Or at least a chance to understand where they are coming from. Some of my best friend vote the opposite way from me.
If I had a say it would be anyone who would stop the tpp happening. That's where you lost me. What is ''t p p'' ?
It stands for trans pacific parntership .
Basicly its a free trade deal.
But with some nasty bits that will make corperations more powerful and their profits more important than our government or laws.
Thank you.
I am not sure it even qualifies as a free trade deal. It gives U.S. based companies the right to litigate in other countries, using U.S. laws, so it seems more a relinquishing of sovereignty.
This place has enough difficulty keeping it civil at times, why include the lit fuse of politics. It is one of the few places to come look and ONLY see stuff about surfing. It is a haven in the mire that is the internet.
PS the only change that will happen if the presidents switch is about abortion. I think maybe we should let the women of this world decide that law.

This has all been discussed before - many times. Pretty basic actually. There are all kinds of political forums on which you can rant to your heart's content.
As long as I can remember on this site, politics has been an off limits sort of thing. It's much like religion... everybody has an opinion and most of us don't really care to hear about it. There is enough acrimony over things like which masking tape to use.
Does anybody really feel the need to discuss politics on a SURFBOARD DESIGN FORUM? Maybe the concept of "SURFBOARD DESIGN FORUM" is hard to understand?
Life is more than just foam and fibreglass, what's wrong with something O.T.?
Can we discuss politics IN surfing ?
maybe move every OT thread to Bugs and Errors and leave General Discussion area just for General Surfcraft Discussion only ?
its in the bugs and error if you want to say more
bring it on

By censoring a thread they show their bias.
To argue about building tech is par for the course here and actually a way to learn. OT threads give us a glimpse of topics from "our" perspectives as a tribal community about something other than A sandpapers vs B sandpapers thereby reinforcing comraderie as a whole.
Whatevahs,
get surf?
I'd like to take a guess on what would happen if a political thread continued and didn't get deleted...
one half would take the side of our current president, the other half would take the side of his competitor... everyone would b*tch and moan about why the other side is incorrect and misinformed. nothing would be resolved... no one would change their mind. the election will take place in a few days... whatever happens will happen and there is nothing you or I can do about it. this is why I hate watching television news. quite frankly, I am sick of political ads. that sh*t doesn't belong here... go to cnn.com and discuss it. you read the rules... talk about surfboards!

True. Freedom of speech is possibly the most sacred of our rights under the Constitution. All others proceed from there. Like the right to address our gov't, freedom from religion, due process, etc.
But, this is a privately owned website and those who hold the rights to the site can decide what they want, and don't want, to be posted here. Want to talk politics? Go to another forum, or start your own.

When someone tells you what your doing with those materials is forbidden , or surfing at this or that beach is restricted , or you cannot have a beachfire it may be too late. I guess since my BA is in "Political and Ideological History" I enjoy this stuff a bit more than a few of the folks around here, and then I love to talk about religion too.
Sorry for those who find this a thoughtless meander by a fool, but since I have been shaping boards for some of the most respected and revered builders for going on forty years sometimes just hearing some of the crap that people ask around here boars the S#^t out of me. Still somedays its a challenge just to get the rails even.

Another legend in his own mind... This place is full of 'em!
PS - With a BA in "Political and Ideological History" I'd think you'd have learned to spell 'bores' correctly.
Personally I'm always ready to learn, although I do not always like being taught. - Winston Churchill

Maybe there should be another section on sways, the 'general non sufboard discussion??'
C'mon grat, i've grown to like the up front manner of your posts, but politics?. Almost like posting about which brain washing, i mean religion do you follow??
Simple solution. Create an off-topic anything goes sub-forum.
But that is not really what the Rodent wants is it? Controversy/conflict?
An off-topic sub-forum would not disrupt the flow of the main forum would it?

Vote for Steve Stockman in Texas District 36 today, he is my close friend, and someone I love. He's definitely a political maverick, and tells the funniest stories of anyone I know. The press hates him down there because he doesn't do interviews. Ask him if you ever meet him who makes the best smoked fish, and who has the best beach barbeques, and then you can settle up things with me, because he knows.
I have nothing to settle.

Maybe we can use this to have fuck off, fuck you, fuck me, fuck 'em all threads without moderater intervension... Ha!
I voted - is it a secret??? I guess so, but not for long... As anyone may guess, a bleeding heart socialist like me voted for Obama...

Taylor you have potty mouth, probably from eating too much guvmentcheese- I mean natchocheese, and those beans in yo' burrito tain't beans. Still you can say whatever you want, it still wont make it right.
Hey thirdshade, what does that mean anyways? I am running out of pomegranates. They are only around for a short while, and nothing tastes better than a good pomegranate, and nothing forces me to relax like peeling one. Pomegranates, eat them while you can.
Ah ghetto... Give it a rest... I'll say what I want about me, but it's the classic, "You don't know me!"
Good luck to us all...

I hope the best for you too. I am tired, and in need of rest.

Just finished watching the Haleiwa contest while eating 5 pomegranates that were chilled in the fridge. Three of them were the sweet kind with no tanginess, but really juicy, and the other two were that deep dark purple with both sweet and tangy overtomes.
I don't have a problem with freedom of speech.
What I do have a problem with is... Having to sift through all the B.S. responses posted by the same crew over and over again just so they can marvel at what they've written... Always the same people doing ALL the ( pseudo intellectual ) talking... You could nearly consider that a form of oppression ............If there's a silver lining to this thread (for myself)... At least I found a cool tag line- double quote...

Sounds like that guy who has been shaping for all those people for that long probably knows quite a few people, and probably picked up a few tricks along the way. Experience is earned.
I know quite a few people.
Hookers pick up a few tricks along the way.

The best you can do are hookers, and even then they look down on you. It works for you as long as you pay your dues...

Ouch!!
What a terrible thing to say.... Yet I thoroughly respect your freedom of thought and expression in saying it.....
