RIP Bud Caldwell

Wanted to let you all know that unfortunately my grandfather, Alex “Bud” Caldwell, passed away on Sunday. For those of you who didn’t know Bud, he was a true waterman - an avid surfer, sailor, fisherman, and a true purveyor of the aloha spirit. Bud always had a postive attitude and was an advocate of doing what you love, which certainly was apparent when it came to surfing.  Bud had been surfing Sunset Cliffs since the 40’s (If you’ve ever climbed down the cliff at Ab, you’ve got Bud to thank for the steps carved in the cliff) and built many of the boards in the water at that time, and continued to build his own boards until he could no longer surf. When not in the water, he could probaby be found in the Tourmaline parking lot, eating a donut at the tailgate. He is the reason I love surfing and being in the ocean, and the reason I’ve started to take up shaping myself.

If you’ve got a story about Bud, please share. I will let you all know of any memorial services that are planned.
