The article originated with the New Zealand Herald. The link was posted by MrT. Nowhere does the NZ Herald attribute Roy as the source, in fact, it specifies that he would not divulge certain information. The other stuff you may not agree with, is the same stuff he has said all along, which many did not agree with. Its all a moot point. But I see nothing to accuse Roy of, after reading the article, except for being Roy.
Cool the guy made money, a lot of money, on his board.
Im not sure why somebody would buy this, but i guess its the same as art to somebody. Art as we all know can be sold for astronomical prices for something not all that special. For example this $105,000,000 print that is essentially a red rectangle and a few vertical lines. I liken his board to this painting. Nothing amazing, with a high price tag.
Slightly off topic,
Before i started making boards and selling some for cheap, and before i started surfing, a local surfshop near my then house had a beautiful ocean green board in the window made by a boat builder. I was convinced i was going to need thousands to afford such a thing. I was 12 at the time and quite shy, and when i finally asked the surfshop owner (R.I.P. Bob) he said it was 300$. I was amazed that something so amazing was somewhat in my reach.
Looking back on this now, I not only realize it was a cheap-o used board, but surfboards are drastically underpriced. Handshaped surfboards really fly under the radar. Not many people I think understand how much tallent, work, and planing goes into a good board for them to enjoy. Handshapes in my opinion are worth a lot more then what most shapers get for their boards. If at 12 i saw the art that a surfboard can be, im not sure why true kinetic art like a surfboard, doesnt sell for more.
It never bothered me that Roy was on Sways and wouldn't if he were these days. I don't have to read his bullshit and if I did (purly for amusement); I wouldn't have to reply to his posts. Yeah as Lance said; Maybe he'll get off the dole now. Get himself neutered or something. He's like a NZ Paskowitz. All those kids. L

That which can be assorted without evidence was read in an illegal magazine.
I'll admit that some of the videos and shots of Roy are very humorous, but there's a video of Roy on his website riding one of his monster boards in head high long lefts. He does a really good job of handling that board, and I'll bet that it is not an easy board to ride. He probably rides his boards better than some of the people on Sways ride whatever they're riding. The guy definitely lives life the way he wants to. I personally wouldn't be wearing that color of wetsuit, but for him with the bus, the boards, and hair, it all fits together.
Hey Roy, if you really did get 1.5M, send me one of those trippy whale fins you're making. I'm sure you can afford to give away some of those now.
He's an interesting guy. His marketing is getting better, too. I read the web page suggested my surfnspy. I can't believe anyone spent that much money on a surfboard tho. If they did I would have to say Roy's an Fricken Genius. Mike
I listened to a couple of audio files (can't remember who sent me the links, might have been Roy himself) and I thought he was very intelligent, somewhat soft spoken, and made a lot of sense. It certainly gave me a different perspective of him. It may have been an interview with him talking about the 3D printing he's been doing, I forget.
