Here is what is going down!

Next go at a HPLB similar to the first one I posted.

Just a little more fancy, yeah cut it up and did some more glue lines.

Kind of at my limits with my tools at hand.

Gotta get working on my modified DR. Snyder band saw!

An awful lotta talk about the Skil 100 lately, mine works just fine stock.

Not the only horse in the stable as I would never waste my babe on these tasks.

Mattwho- I would have used my skil100. Why are you worried about wearing it out? Didn't you see "the perfect 40 minute surfboard" vid yet? The skil 100 is a Tank man! You might slightly wear out the blades but those can be sharpened or replaced. Just use it! There's a lot of Folk's that turn their pp into "show rm pieces" kinda like car shows...are we concerned about Cars or shaping board? I'm not gonna worry about my skil100 gettin a little wear.....after all it's for shaping! Not looking pretty. As for a stock skil- that's ok if you don't mind more steps in the process... i do. That's WHY i went ahead w mods.it was not too difficult, it doesn't damage a thing, and it can replaced if (clicker) removed...FYI -i could not get mine out bcuz I left my big screw driver in storage hundreds of mi away...all I did was bend the Damn clicker towards the roof....that's it! I don't think you have to take it apart. I've read guys push a flat headed screw driver to push the clicker plate up towards roof a bit...I would put the clicker arm in center, and prod the sides up a little at a time, check clicker...it should loosen up. The only drawback is, if you push Too far you're gonna have a totally loose fly. FYI - here's EXACTLY what I did on mine: unscrew the belt cover, remove belt- just pull it off the front end - it'll fly off ..unscrew the cutter blade side next to cutter head on LEFT...wiggle the WHOLE CUTTER ASSEMBLY off (takes a few mins)....now unscrew the shoe on bottom, slide it off towards the rear...now that your there, all you want to do is take your thumbs after aligning the clicker at 12 0'clock - just slowly push clicker back towards the roof of planer....go slow and check for looseness/tightness...I had To pull my clicker back up a smidge as I don't want it too loose.up to you. I'M GLAD I MODIFIED MINE! I want to keep up with the times. There's no benefit of leaving it stock - as you might as well use a stock Hitachi planer. In other words, you will only be getting more power using a stock skill 100, but you won't be getting a ability to zero your cuts WHILE planing.youll have to stop and start -just like w stock planer...But do as you will. I'm glad -Lowel talked some sense into me. Think about it. Do you want to get better? Or do you want to just do the basic routine that's been done too long....let's just name a few notable shapers who modified their units: Rusty, Merrick, and most pro's...look at the NEW Clark planer! There's a reason for OTF mods.that said, you can still shape great boards w out mods. It's up to you.my MAIN reason: you don't have to stop and start - so you can be more efficient. Hope this helps.

For the record:    A stock Skil 100 will do a zero cut pass, if and only if, you know how to adjust your blades.    If you do not know how, a zero cut setting will elude you.     Always consider the source of any advice given on ANY forum.    Swaylock's, in the past, had a real depth of capable experienced craftsmen, that could be relied upon, for good advice.     Not so much, anymore.    Many, too many, have passed away.  Many others have simply ''kicked out'' of a ride that is no longer worth the effort.    Frankly, I'm drifting into that camp too.    There are still a significant number of forum members that are quite capable in all aspects of building surfcraft.     Just remember, a great many of the ''how to advisors'' that pop up here, have little or no understanding of how little they know.

Thank You Bill.

The "Clicker" is just so you can feel the lever move and give you a feel for where the lever is positioned.

With it, or without it, the planer will always zero out.

If it won't, the blades are out of adjustment. (As Bill said above).

No real modification made there.

Cutting the base length, increasing cutting depth, rounding the base corners, making a vacuum shoot.

Those are mods.

I think use the planer FIRST before becoming an expert on the subject.

Shapa, you have a lot to learn with that planer.

Slow your roll.

Depth adjustment, back-cuts, tapering rail bands, and actually using that depth adjuster during passes are just the beginning.

The planer with the wear on the handle shows it has been used for 1000's of boards.

I know that planer like the back of my hand.

That don't happen over-night.

Bill- please don't twist the truth! Ok, I did not mean you can't zero out on a stock pp. What I meant is, you have to stop planing, adjust and continue planing........the OTF mods allow a variety of planer techniques you can't do smoothly w stock planer. Maybe you could, but it's probably a lot more difficult to move a stiff lever. That's all I'm saying. If I'm ignorant, then so is everyone else who uses a modified planer! but that's NOT the case.if it were, NOBODY would even bother with the OTF MODS on any planer --but THEY do!!! Bill -I say this as a friend, but why not try it before you knock it?

Barry - I agree, I need to shape more boards etc...yadda, yadda, yadda... but I don't have to re walk steps I am beyond....come on Now - there's teens running pp w OTF MODS.........right? But yeah, I'm taking it slow. Thanks for your .02.

Barry - where did I say I was an expert? All im saying is, is I think my mods will save me time.......so if I talk about doing a mod - that makes me an expert? Here's my plan: I'll mod tmy planer, and offer a tip if I want to.... it's a FORUM. Just because you built 2000 boards, does it make you better? What makes you better, is to learn something new FWIW. All I'm trying to accomplish is to improve my skills, learn something of value, and help others. If that makes me WRONG - then I'm wrong. Did I ever say I was right? No I didn't. All I am doing is trying to participate in a forum.

Maybe "expert" was a wrong choice of word.

I'm just trying to convey that maybe you should use that planer before recomending uses and modifications.

Improve your skills and learn something of value.

Bill - it doesn't matter if you shaped 10,000 boards, it doesn't matter if you surfed fifty foot Waimea bay, it doesn't matter if you shaped longer than me - it doesn't make you better than anyone. What are you a ranked badge wearer? Do I have to surf ten x's per week for a pass to post??
