Wow! As a Father and (grandpa) I know you teach them the basics. Along with respect and insight to Mother ocean. And let them develop. Your boy shows experience and style beyond his age!!! Good job! I feel he is going to go far. Yeah still lurking "the dark depths" of Sway's

I would rather be someone's shot of whiskey, than everyone's cup of tea.

Thanks.  The past year and a half I've had some injury issues and not spending as much time in the water so I invested in some quality camera gear.  Honestly I enjoy shooting as much as surfing.  Wish I had a $10,000 budget for next level camera gear.

Nice pics.  I seem to remember comments you made on your first decent camera and the Zoom.  Tell me again what you started with and what you’ve purchased the last year or two.  Lowel

The first camera was a Sony DSC HX300 super zoom point and shoot.  It was a fabulous camera in its time for under $500.  It did a great job and the super zoom cameras available now blow away the one I had....actually still have it.  Now I'm Using a Canon pro-sumer level DSLR body the 7D.  For a lens I am using the white pro-level Canon 100-400 IS USM.   My setup looks basically like what is pictured below.  I may make some further upgrades over the next 6-months.  I'm basically shooting with what my research suggests is the best rig you can assemble for shooting surfing for under $2,000 on the used market.  I'd love to have the budget for the 600mm lens and a Canon 5D Mark IV but that would be like buying a car.

Ended up with a double post so I'll post up some more samples from my new rig.

What makes the new camera stand out is the quality you get when you blow the pictures up.  Here is a sample pulled from a low res version of a picture.........keep in mind that this is low res.  The full size file is 20mb and too big to post here so I convert the files and bring them down to less than 1/20th the file size for the web.  Had I used the raw file to extract the head shot it would be quite sharp.  Picture taken from over a football field away to get the angle.

Working off of the original file I cropped this out.  This isn't even one of my sharpest pics but this gives you an idea.

Don't be this guy!  Dropping in on a 12 year old that is this slotted on a perfect wave is a bullshit thing to do.

All very nice.   Thanks for the camera info.  Where were the shots at the Pier taken?  Florida or Summertime Atlantic City.  Never been back there, so I am totally unfamiliar with the spots.

Those pictures are at Jennette's Pier in Nags Head, North Carolina during the ESA Eastern's competition.......just outside the contest area.
