Cheapest new material Longboard category:
So far:
Glue $3.20, Balsa wood "free" from packing creates $0.00, EPS 2 lb blank...dirty old 10'2" in 2 chunks from craigslist price $10.00. Fiberglass to cover fin...leftover cut offs..lets say $2.00. Resin to lam up approx 1/2 pint...traded Keith some 3M tape and stuff, my cost $0.00
So far for all thats pictures...$15.20
Shape TBD, but board has custom 1 1/2 balsa stringer...and strange balsa optical enhanced cut away diaphram
Nice! I like the barter system.
Longboard=wrongboard with summer coming. You just need a nice clean little fish......Bitchen fin, tho! Mike
Res,
I love what you did with that fin.
Me three.
Is there a bigger/close up shot available for a better look at it?
Funny...thanks for the fin shout out...It didn't start that way, it started out perfectly normal. But, But, But my dog got a hold of it..and started chewing it on the lawn. So with no lamination save in sight, I did the manly thing! I took the hole saw to it. Below is the K9 damage. Im too anal to just let it be..so I chopped out the damage and came up with the design.
I'll post close up shots once installed and glossed up... I mean how close up do you want?

"We ain't on our way to Wembley,we ain't gonna win the league. No matter how much they let us down - Westham's still our team"...
very very resourceful. loving this. BTW, how do I find free balsa for my stringers? where to look?

Balsa packing strips?...I have a big pile of the stuff. Resinbutt (oops I mean Resinhead) got it from me. I got it from General Veneer in Los Angeles way back when...
I have some fiberglass and epoxy resin you can have for the Low Budget project. Some extra tail blocks too.......
Ray
Epoxy yes...What do you need from 3M..Full face mask, tape, scrubby pads, smokes, pancakes?
I like pancakes with butter and maple syrup.........233 tape is nice.
I have epoxy for your project....getting ready to make a new order.....soon.......

This is the best part of Swaylocks to me .
You guys are great . :-)
Shameless...........
Logo3.jpg
More shamelessness..stealing rail contours...but then.. if I own the board, it's ok? I keep telling myself that...."hey resinhead, it's ok to steal from other peoples hard work?" But then you'll see they are true 50/50, maybe slightly pinched a tad. So I pinched the pinched.

This is awesome mate, can't wait to see the finished product.
Got the 3 1/2 slab down to a workable 3 1/16...kept the 1/16 for sanding errors etc. Got the rails as close as I can to the original.
Blank is ready for spackalackaling

Nice Resinhead!
Plenty hidden tips in the pictures.
In the spackle shop...got spackle for $4.99 on deal at Sherwin Williams. and distilled water for .99 cents..So I'm up to $21.18 for the board so far.

Awesome Resinhead.....Yep, these are the kind of threads that used to be so prevalent on Swaylocks, and I love to follow them and see updates. This is going to be an awesome board for sure. Good choice for a template too(Bought a Bing Levitator last year....It's the board I've been "trying" to shape myself for the past 5 years or so)... ;) Sometimes I have to buy a "REAL" board to see how it's supposed to be done......

looking good! for 20 bucks wow!

Awesome thread. Stoked on your indoor outdoor setup and doing a legit build on the cheap (did you do all of the shaping outside?) This is where the sways ingenuity and tricks come out. chunks of foam for rail template...yes sir, I will borrow that. Cant wait to see the finihsed product.

Yep shaping is done outside under the magnolia tree....old skool. I used to have a shaping room so the "feel and process" never leave. But the bird shit, and ants....ants continually fall out of the tree on to the boards, and humming birds like to crap on boards..go figure. So I do all my fine sanding, spackling, glassing etc indoors...ant and bird shit free.
Boards and exact 9'6" x 23" x 3"....2 small bird shits and 3 ant smears. They should sand out, if not I'll drill a hole and pour epoxy with a spider or a barbie doll head floating in it.....maybe both?
My last backyard setup was done under some trees. I stretched a heavy rope between two trees and put a tarp on it. The rope acted as the 'ridge' of the roof and then I secured the bottom edges lower down on a few trees. More like a makeshift tent.

"Barbie heads" would be SO awesome. Who needs wax when you have barbie heads???
So this is where things get dicey. Fiberglass is odd and end rolls, 2oz, 4oz S, warp 6, 4oz E etc. Might do a frankenstein glass job, 2oz, 4oz, 6oz patch etc etc. Swapped Keith some Plaskett Creek swag I was going to bring up last summer for enough 4oz to cover top and bottom. I got enough epoxy to get it going. Used pickle jar for mixing...1 pair of gloves. I'm going to say $10 in epoxy, $10 my cost for sample swap for fiberglass, glass jar free, gloves .02 cents. So far $41.20
digital weigh in used 600 grams of epoxy, lazer temp check, instead of sealing blank for color I'm using a sacrificial layer of 4 oz. This way if I decide to to color work it wont get too strange from the EPS beads saturating from this funky 10'2" blank.
Picture13.png
Flipped, laminated.
Picture14.png
Added a 6oz over the 4oz bottom for color work and weight. Board with 2x4 top and 1x4 bottom weighted in at only 8.8 lbs...As for the blue tint..WTF..blotchy, streaky, blue...not my best effort. Old tint had chunks and forgot to strain? can you even strain epoxy?
I hate blue tint..especially with epoxy and eps, but I thought what the hell its the SBC. I should have added some blue or purple pigment to black it out.....oh well. I just didn't want to kill the look of the balsa stringer.
Good news is I'm still at $41.20 so far.
Picture15.png
4 oz over the top with lam under it...Zipper cut so I don't have to wrap the rails, and sand rails, and mess up my blotchy streaky blue tint. So the board has 4-4-4 top and 4-6 bottom...All done laminating.

Nice work! I am enjoying this thread.
What's up with the mattress in the back? Do you pull it out to take a nap after you get tired from sanding?
This thread is precisely why I came up with the idea for the Spring Board Challenge!!!!!
Not sure why the mattress...except my wife uses it as a car stoper when she pulls the car in. Sometimes I use it to put a board on and do ding work or light sanding.......I'll sell it to you cheap? It could be used for all sorts of great stuff. I tried to nap, but my feet hang off and my dog is a foot licker.

Resin, Please explain how you do the cut lap with all that fiberglass hanging down. Mike
Mike, thats a zipper cut lap, so I never gets folded under. I could hace cut it a tad closer...but I'm lazy.
With epoxy I cut the zipper when the epoxy kicks like Jello(tm) consistency, maybe a tad harder / set up. I cut around the tape line cutting the tape and cloth at the same time. I cut the cloth on the angle so that then cloth settles back down so there is hardly a seam. When I do the hot coat, I do the bottom first covering the little seam, then top..so I never have to prep or hit the cloth showing weave, It just make a cleaner set up when you have color on the bottom and dont want to sand into the color prepping the lam for hotcoat.
Nice.
Well for some unknown reason I can't see anything past page 2? So I have know idea what Rooster said..but I can only imaging
Here is the leash loop...free no charge, just scraps and odd bits So the price is still at about $40.00

Cheap fin tacked into place with a little fin rope...
Picture17.jpg
Beechen! I refrained from commenting regarding the mattress and the foot licking dog. Mike
Most dogs lick more than feet.
This thread is great!
I always assumed multiple football-sized patches were needed to give strength to the connection between fin and board. But in this case, when the fin is already laminated, just finropes will do?
I'll be putting patches on over the rope. The issue I have with epoxy is that I dont want too many layers at one time, or the cloth gets all frothy. The fin still needs glass up the sides and on the deck. I just did the fin rope for that cool looking fillet around the fin base.
understood! I did get that frothy texture around the base of my first glass on.. thanks
Thumbs up!
Ok still at $41.20..I have free gloves, free sand paper, free tape...Still $41.20..and it looks like that might be my over all cost. It just depends on the gloss coat? If automotive 2 pak it will be cheep, but if poly gloss then not sure.
Anyhow here is a detail on the fin install, I bear all my bumps and dings along the way...very cleansing to the soul. Anyhow this is all epoxy so don't get all pinched up in the details of the install, I would do poly a bit differently. I do it this way for the clarity of the glass build up..Remember this is a EPS epoxy build, not PU/PE. So 2 layers of 6oz with glass rope under for the install.
Picture18.png
Flipped when fin was still wet..and do da hot coat. Amazingly from all the touching, dog licking, and Fritos(tm) eatting..I didn't get any fisheyes........yet. Custom pinwheel logo.
Picture19.png
Flip and hot coat the blue side and cheap o fin.

Digging it. Very cool project and thread.
