Not sure I agree with your statement but I understand what you are saying and respect your point of view.
It reminds me of people stating that computers will kill "real" artists, because everything will be made on a computer... guess what, they were wrong.
What happened is that it created new types of artists, digital artists as we call them, but it doesn't mean that art made by hands has disappeared nor will disappear nor it means that digital artists didn't learn to paint or draw by hand before using a computer...
The truth is, artists who learnt to create things by hands are way better at adapting to new technologies than the ones who didn't. Why? Because they understand the limitation of the machines but can still back it up with their experience and knowledge. A machine is just a tool you can use or not and it still needs your brain and knowledge to operate.
Some people just want some instant gratification I guess :), take a CNC file on the net, change 3 values and call it their design without even knowing what they changed...
Lovin' it. Threads like this are cathartic - get it all out! Haha.
Catharsis is short lived.
The status quo returns and endures.

I check in here on a regular basis, but rarely contribute. I sometimes give advice when people ask directly but most of the time questions are answered quickly. There are many reasons why things are slowing down on the site and some of the ones listed above are valid.
To me the pictures are worth 1000 words and since uploading pics was creating issues with the site, I believe people are posting fewer pics. Less pics results in less conversation about boards.
If a picture is worth 1000 words, videos could be considered a short story or in some cases a novel. Fiberglass Hawaii has posted a number of videos on resin tints, glassing, cutlaps, sanding etc. People can learn so much from a good video they may be making fewer mistake haha... I think people are looking to Youtube for their build info.
Before I post I ask myself the questions:
Am I adding anything new?
Do people really want to learn or see something from some guy in Nova Scotia?
I usually answer no to these questions and go about my day.
I think participation has dwindled some, for sure. Not sure why, but the new format seems to be a factor, I used to connect via i-phone, and still do, but the new format is very i-phone unfriendly, I can't see pics half the time, no way to enlarge them anymore. Posting and other stuff is way more difficult on the i-phone.
Also, I can see how people lose interest in posting stuff no one seems to care about. I started a build thread awhile back, and after a full day and a couple hundred hits I didn't get even one comment, so I shut it down. Someone PM'd me and said they couldn't find it, so I re-started it over in errors and bugs, and found there was a bit more interest shown in that venue. I also have another thread over there on a subject that isn't of general interest, so the few of us who are interested can carry on without disturbing the General Discussion crowd.
I posted a pic awhile back and got reamed for it because it was a picture someone had seen before. I was posting to the guy who started the thread, but someone else felt it was offensive to them to see a picture they had already seen. As a result, I post pics less on General Discussion, and stick with the less critical bunch over in Errors and Bugs.
Hi Yorky , happy Australia day mate , its a long time since we heard from you , I was up on the gold coast last year and saw a couple of your boards , nice , gotta say nothing stays the same and these are the good ol days .
Scrub it kook
"I posted a pic awhile back and got reamed for it because it was a picture someone had seen before."
HAHA - if you call that little exchange getting reamed, it might be time to HTFU. All I did was point out the fact that the board in question has been seen plenty of times and that it really didn't do anything to answer the guy's question.
It's not like the good old days when the Swaylocks Mafia could silence members with impunity, steal their ideas, and run with them to Chinese manufacturers for mass production without paying any royalties to the inventor. Fuck... I received death threats over stuff like that.
Ok, thanks for clarifying. Now that I see what you consider an appropriate photo for Swaylocks, I realize we'll just have to agree to disagree, and move on. Have a great day!
The new format is certainly harder to see, harder to use. I used to check several times a day to see the new threads and get the early comments before they were edited or deleted.
And there's a lack of creative discussion that's been replaced with redux subjects and just silence.
Maybe Sways needs to undergo a change to then return better or maybe there's no way to bring back that era.
Maybe the people, their culture and conversation of that era are irreplaceable ? I know we've lost a few of the Chosen, but the swiftness of the change on Sways would indicate it's a response to a quick change that's turned folk away.
I blame the new format because I don't like it and it's changed my behaviour.
