Yo Im tom form NZ and thinking of doin an extended stopover to buy boards for an indo trip to save money as boards here seem a lot more expensive than over the ditch. How much would you pay for a new shortboard and how much for a semi gun? Would there be options on the shelf for heavily glassed boards? would i be able to spend say 3 days there and get the right boards?
If you are doing a stop over especially for boards, consider one of 2 options.
1. Sydney as you said or
2. Gold Coast.
I was in Sydney for 18 months and there are many good shapers in the Northern Beaches... too many to recommend as it is really personal preference but a good place to start would be Surfection board store in Manly... This is the "Surfection Boardstore" at 95 Pittwater Rd. Manly, not the Surfection store on the Corso - If you don't see racks and racks of boards and not much else then you are in the wrong Surfection.
Brett is the man who helped me out there... you can get him on +612 99774777. I may have narrowed your options too much here, as if you have time you can look around more but these guys have a big range and can give you a good run down on off-the-rack glass options and shapes. In terms of board dimensions, I'd recommend ringing them and asking about what's available. Typically you don't see a lot of guns in the retail stores but ask and you will get an answer. If you've got a specific dimension or glassing job in mind, you could always order the shape in advance and pick it up on the way through (asuming you have lead time before your trip). Most places take credit card now so your standard VISA or Mastercard should do the trick.
For Gold Coast, I'm no expert but there is a hot bed of great shapers up there... Feral Dave posts on here, you could ask him... but he may just tell you to come and see him ;) Either way he should be able to recomend a good place to get guns / semi-guns on the Goldy.
Oh, forgot your other question... standard price for your standard off-the-rack shorty is around $650 AUS. It goes up from there depending on fin systems, spray jobs etc. etc. For guns, ask around.

mona vale and brookvale on sydney's northern beaches were kind of the 'epicentre' when I was in Sydney.
There is a website somewhere that lists akll the names addresses and phone numbers of board builders Australia wide.
If it's not at www.surfresearch.com.au ,
you might want to 'google search' under " Surfboard Manufacturers, Australia " , or similar.

oops , sorry bout that, just that I do sell alot of boards to Sydney surfers and thought it was relevant to the topic ....no worries.....
You can go to Sydney AUS and buy a nice board...........Lots of nice boards.....
Or you can buy a surfboard from a shaper in your own country.....A shaper that builds a quality product...a guy with a family...a guy that lives down the street and needs work.....Did you look into that ?
I've never met Paul Cannon but he posts here...and he lives in N Z...and he builds nice boards.....and he has a family..............DeanB lives in NZ and so does Nocean.....You should contact some locals before you go "offshore".
Yes there are plenty of boards in northern sydney but I think you can buy better value (particularly 2nd hand in the Gold coast) I live in northern Sydney beaches and naturally think its great to be blessed with so many shapers and board shops (I`ve bought three custom made shapes from the one shaper so far). But i found the gold coast to be about 20 percent cheaper and quite keen to accept a lower offer. I asked some owners why its cheaper and they said because of all the passing tourist trade creating a greater turnover of stock and there`s still good profit on the turnover for locally made boards.... another option is ebay...some great bargains if you time your visit right.
(Actually just checked now and saw an original 6ft 8 Mcoy gun for 200 dollars.)
