5'10''x20"x2.5" and 1.06ft3...it really feels great...i have a test run planned this weekend for the old b-day. Hopefully the swell predictions pick up. PRAY FOR SURF!!
Question regarding coil repair.. I hit the rail of my flashback in Costa Rica earlier this year surfing a rock reef and had to do a quick repair with some epoxy sun cure. It's held up fine but when I decided to sand it down some yesterday and clean it up a bit, I discovered another small crack on the rail near my rear quad fin box that was slowly but surely leaking salt water. I angled my board so that the crack would dry out but it's been over 24 hrs and it's still got some water in it. How long should I wait for it to completely dry? I was planning on surfing it tomorrow, would it be a bad idea to seal it with epoxy and surf anyway? It's not dripping but when I squeeze the rail there's still water coming out
Hopefully someone more qualifies will chime in, but I personally wouldnt seal it knowing its wet inside.
If I had to surf it, I would probably use that clear 3m packing tape to seal as good as possible from further water infiltration, then just peel it off and continue the drying process after surfing.
Ideally, I would surf a different board and just let it dry, but I get how that might not be possible.
Better to let it dry but If you don't notice a weight difference there's not much water in there. EPS is blown with steam so there is always a little moisture in the foam.

I dry any dings on my Coils with a hair dryer, applying mild heat to the surrounding area until water starts oozing out for about 5-10 minutes (applying heat for a couple seconds at a time) then let it rest overnight if the flow has severely decreased.
Apply some more heat the next day, if nothing comes out, then its repair time.
Honestly, its hard to recommend this process if you dont feel like its good for your board, but then it has worked for me without any negative results (no yellowing, no delam, no weakening). Im pretty sure epoxy gets just as hot or hotter when curing than this method, so technically it should be fine.
I use this method on boards of any construction, and did use it on the one rail ding I got in one of my Coils many many moons ago as well as a few others I've repaired for friends. Open the wound up a bit to the point you can slip in a piece of cloth (cotton or even a paper towel) with a significant "tail" hanging out. If you can, set the board up ding-down so gravity provides an assist. Get some sort of air moving across the cloth (natural or fan) to evaporate the water that gets wicked out. Set up the board in a warm area (room, in the sun, etc.) and occasionally hit it with a hair dryer to accelerate evaporation and to expand the air inside the board (both of whch help draw/drive water out).
Once sufficiently dry, I like to work some white Gorilla glue into the wound to back-fill the damaged area before patching. Then repair as usual, bearing in mind Coils are monocoque construction, where the strength of the board is in the shell- I tend to use multiple lightweight glass in large-ish patches (not just patch the hole) to spread the load.
Thanks everyone, I appreciate the responses. I ended up drying it ding down for 3 days and did ivans hair dryer method for about 20 mins on and off before patching it up with epoxy suncure. There was still a very small amount of water if I squeezed the rail but I'm not too worried about it. If I happen to get another ding or crack down the road I'll definitely try some gorilla glue before patching as well
Surfed a nice dumpy beach break in Costa Rica that is real heavy and fast. I love my Coils, and even though I've never had one custom made for me, I currently own four of them. I've never had an issue and have always been impressed. I took a version of a daily driver, a 5.11 x 18 7/8 x 2 5/16 blend of a Blur and Widerboard (according to Steve, who it was shaped for). Nice single concave, volume at .89, great board that was loose enough, but still held up nice. UNTIL, I did my best to smash the lip on a wave right about to close out and when I landed, and fell, the nose just straight up creased about 15 inches from the tip. It's like a floppy nose with two solid cracks in the rails.
I couldn't believe it. I was crushed... I've never broken a board, much less even dinged a Coil. Now I have what is probably as close to a snapped Coil as they get. If it was poly, I'm sure it would have snapped, but instead, it's just floppy. Even surfing it in I could feel the flex just gone and completely dead, if that makes sense.
So, can it be fixed? I don't know, I'm going to take it to a local shop and see what they think. It just hurts that a $500 board (after the cost to get it here with me) is basically done. I'm truly blown away since I've never heard of this happening. In truth, I can't keep up with this thread and the one on Surfermag, so it may happen more than I realize, but in all my reading, I haven't seen it. Anyone had this happen or had to fix it? You know, misery loves company and all...
Hey guys I was wondering if anyone would be ordering a board in the SD area within the next few months? IF you are LMK so we can save on some shipping :D
I've ridden an M80 and M80 slim -- liked both and know how they go; I'm considering a chopstick for my next board. Posted this question on the erbb, and thought I'd post it here as well:
Can anyone who has ridden both a chopstick and M80 (either OG or slim) compare the way they go?
Hey Coil family! I have been slacking on giving the community feedback on 2 custom orders of mine, and unclefunk's concerns made me step up my commenting game. To start, Coil's are by far the best boards I have ever ridden, and I spend the majority of my sessions riding these flexy-alien-tech sticks. I've gone through a good number of shapers, and these guys are leagues ahead of any other boards I've ridden. Especially in terms of construction tech. And especialy if you do not like fixing dings. I lived next to the CI warehouse in SB for a good while, and my life was ding repair city.
My first was a blur, and after 6 months of getting to know the board and riding it in plenty of decent surf (and only inflicting one small pressure dent on the front foot), I brought it down to Mex for the biggest south swell that the East Pac pushed out last year. In short... the surf pumped, and I got to surf some of the best waves of my life on the best board I've ever owned. For about an hour. And then I pulled in, got smashed, and paddled back out totally oblivious I was ridding a totalled board. I dropped into the next wave and realized that the incredible flex off the bottom was just gone. After somehow making the drop and turning off the back of the wave, I checked out the board, and found the exact 'floppy' description described by unclefunk. Pretty much the coil equivalent of snapping, but more like a very seriously creased board. Just know that if that happens to a coil, any other board would be in about 5 pieces. To say the least, I was majorly bummed. But you gotta pay to play! [Fixing a coil in this condition is like fixing a fully snapped board. You could do it... but you will not be riding the same board ever again.]
The second is a M80, and I'm still riding that groovy little thing multiple times a week after 6 months. So much fun to ride! I've found it to be ideal for really clean, offshore beachbreak, the kind of conditions where you want extra paddle power to be able to push over the lip. That, or anything under shoulder high. It has definitely become the only shortboard I bother with in smaller waves. I still have zero dings on the board, and only a few pressure dents. I don't even think I can remember what resin smells like.
I'll be ordering another blur in the next month or two Mike!
Nice write up, MIMn. I was pretty bummed by the major crease, but Mike D and the Brasington crew are gonna hook me up with a couple of new shred sleds! I broke down and ordered two customs and Mike probably sees why I was hesitant to try to tell a shaper what I wanted. I've just ridden boards that are either off the rack or custom shaped for someone else and nearly everytime they worked for me, so it was a little hard for me to hone in on what I wanted, but I'm stoked to see what he produces.
I've essentially got a bigger (longer) M80 round tail with the dims I figured would be good for a little smaller day - 5-10 x 19.5 x whatever makes the board float like I'm hoping. I tend to like 2.25 but I also don't want to handcuff Mike when he's doing his thing.
The other will be a take on the widerboard without so much width in the hips around the front fins. Something that will be a daily driver type board and have upper range. I think we decided on Hawaii lam on both boards and some color options. At this point, I'm so jazzed about seeing something and totally open to whatever comes my way. I should have said just surprise me and take my detailed, but confusing feedback and make whatever you think will work. I think that's basically where we ended up with some dimensions wrapped around it. Maybe I'll keep ordering customs and we'll dial in things, but I tend to blame the archer more than the arrow, so I'll just keep practicing... totally looking forward to it and very stoked that Mike and Kirk were able to accomodate me and my schedule to get a couple boards made. Will post pics soon... Although I was/am hoping Mike surprises me with a sneak peek pic! (hint, hint)
Amen!!! You are definitely right about having to pay to play! I too have slacked off on giving everyone a little review about my M80 Round Tail. I have been stuck working and going to school so i have missed any real decent swell that has hit in the last month. However, Christmas day in OCMD proved to be much more than i had anticipated. Waves ranged from 3ft to 6ft that day. I had been riding another board of mine until that day due to my hesitance about the dims i got from Mike. I had told him about my height, weight, etc...and also informed him of the fact that i will want to ride the board fully suited up in a 5/4 suit. i really thought the board was going to be a bit too light (this is my first Coil btw). I decided to take her out. Literally from the first duck dive i knew the board was going to blow my mind. Mike really knows his shit! I was able to get in nice and early and set up smoothly. The board really held nicely...most of my fails on that day and Saturday were simply due to ME. The board is VERY user-friendly...why do i say this? Well, as stated before, i am in school and working ALOT and really cannot get out like i want. The board really helped boost my confidence when dropping in due to its speed. Also, i really got some "WTF" looks on the beach when some folks saw the board. Everyone who held the board was amazed at how light it was, and everyone who saw it in action was impressed. The Coil name is definitely not known up here, but to those who know quality were really taken back and appreciative to see something "new." Like i said, this is my first Coil and i am really impressed. The board made for a good holiday this year....Thanks Mike and thank you Swaylockians for answering alot of my questions about the boards.
If people up there don't know who we are you can tell them that we've been doing this a long time. If they ever see volume #s on boards they can blame it on us (we started that here in US).
We don't do regular advertising and don't give boards away to celebrities, that may be why they haven't heard of Coil. But you can send them here or to the erbb thread to see more rider reviews than any other surfboard company.
Yeah, Thats what i told them...I told them that the quality of the board is not only due to the technology, but also to the fact that probably all the boards produced are handled with care by human hands and not massed produced. Alot of the guys my age up here are really into finding and supporting smaller companies due to the fact that these small companies will treat them better and really stand by their product. Most of the shops up here don't carry too many big names, but they are there and available if you want one. I dont have a problem with big business, i just like knowing from who and where my boards are made, and if there is an issue, i can contact the shaper directly....Its just a better experience overall. i think that people get stuck in what they are familiar with, and are too scared to try new things...which is what surfing is all about....Thanks Mike.
Surfed last saturday on the pacific side, took the 5'6 swallow WB, waves were 4-6ft-shorebreak (some an easy 8ft on the face as they drained the lineup) glassy and thick... I didnt expect this board to be so freakish on those conditions, the way it engaged the rail at full speed and held on to the face was surprising, and made me one happy surfer. I enjoyed that session so much I dare say it was/will (be) the best of all winter.
My board will be over a year old before it gets wet in the ocean( I have a failed river wave attempt) it will be given its first run in Mozambique and then in June it will be put through the paces at j bay.
'Tis mine. As to why I'm selling... Well, a couple reasons, got in a car accident, then 4 days later, my wife thought she'd try to one up me, so i gots some unexpected bills. Also, I think I missed the mark on the dims. I dunno, i got it to try to be a true longboard buster, not just a groveler. It probably is, given its size and damn near lack of any rocker. Maybe I should just give it a chance. I dunno, I'm just rambling now. I'll probably take it off and give it a go and give a ride report. As for the next evolution of the Coil, the rail fiber/ weave seems to be tighter/ smaller FWIW... Stay tuned.

love the look of the red board. Perhaps headed my way with a travel buddy?

Found a good use for my taco today. Makes a perfect pad to lay on for oil changes.

Here is a pic of my newest next to its big brother.
Time to get this thread back on track.

Thank you. What is that? Dimensions?
I'm not sure exactly. Picked it up second hand. 5'11 x 20.5 x 2.58 1.15ft3? some kind of awesome nugget shape.
The step up is 7' x 21 x 2.75 1.33ft3.
You can't even tell the one on the right is waxed.
I have 2 new boards coming from the coil crew. A new chop stick and a roundtail widerboard.
I have a 6-0 coil fish reluctantly selling. PM me

Mike! Where are you?
As for the next evolution of the Coil, the rail fiber/ weave seems to be tighter/ smaller FWIW... Stay tuned.
Hey Exit98,
I just got home from a week in NYC and saw your reply. It just goes to show why we (or "I") shouldn't opine about things without knowing the back story or when they just plain aren't any of our business. You do whatever you gotta do to take care of your family, and screw the peanut gallery.
Boy, things sure have been quiet around these parts.
@ BearPaw: that looks like a stretched out roundtail flashbackish thing. Please do share a ride report.
@ surfercross: Very nice. I trust you'll post some pics of the new ones. What are you doing different with this chopstick?
@ GregTate: Sorry to hear that. If things were a little different, I'd jump all over that fish in a heartbeat.
@ BearPaw: NJ Craigslist! Selling a flippin brand new Coil?! What the heck?! (I know you're not the seller.) Ridonkulous.
Gregs fish has found a happy home, board rips, was going to give to someone for a b-day but after riding it I dont think so, have to give up a different board.
