After a long hiatus, I was reunited with my coil disc. Awesome conditions, 2' at 9 seconds, water in the upper 30's, air a balmy mid 40's. Ok, not awesome, but in this weather, at least there are no crowds.
I can now boast that I am up to 225lbs of pure out-of-shapeness, and I think the board actually rides better with my extra weight. It's 5'11" and around 1.5 cu feet in volume. Built to be a longboard buster. Happy to say, my longboard never made it out of the van on this trip (Ok, technically it's my daughters longboard) :-)
In tiny waves, the board likes at least a little wave shape, but as long as it's not super mush, it'll hold it's own from Thigh high on up. This day was waist to belly. I think I was the only one not riding a log, and I didn't regret it. By the end of my session this day, the tide had come in and mushed out the tiny waves so I could no longer grab any. A couple of longboarders were still able to get rides, but at that point, it had become so weak, it wasn't worth it regardless of vehicle. So....for me this board truely acts as a longboard alternative, with a mnuch better upside potential. I've ridden it just overhead at softer spots, and as long as I don't forget how wide and bouyant the tail is on my bottom turns, it handles a little size with ease. Although I don't get out enough these days, when I do, I usually grab this board. The extra volume helps in my out of shape condition also.
Oh yeah, hardly a mark on this thing. Minimal denting is impressive given my size
I like the way the coils blend with the winter surroundings too
I've been very quiet for the last couple of months, because we needed to catch up on our backlog. But we've been busy expanding production capability and now we're ready to get boards done a lot faster than in the past year or two.
Customer reviews count for a lot, so thanks for all the feedback on this thread and over on the erbb. The world has plenty of mediocre surfboards - we want to fill the gap for those that desire a little more.
whoa, just got my 2nd Coil...have a MM that I love and was the reason I ordered a Widerboard (6-3,20.5,2.5) as basically my travel/go to whatever size board. I fell off the innernets msg board reading for awhile, didn't even know the Kick tech is now stock??..am happily suprised..this sucker is light. How about some fin recommendations from those riding a Widerboard or the like? Running Future fins in a thruster setup. What I was going to throw in was a vector 3/2 Schimitar (hatchet) because when I was riding a thruster (now mostly quads) it always worked for me....can't wait to get this board in the water...
Just got in before I leave for two years in the Peace Corps. I will find any waves that exist in Tanzania and hopefully some nearby countries. African inspired artwork, roar.
she's all packed up for Tz. This time tomorrow I will be getting on a plane to head over there. I will leave you with a close up of the art. The dark spot on her cheek is one of the logos that is showing through the paint pen. All my boards from Mike are good. Each one gets better as I give him feedback and he dials it in.
By the way, I think this could be a very good alternative to FCS2 (not that I personally had a problem with it) for those who rather screw their fins or want adjustability. Doesnt seem any different than Futures as far as installation goes and in their video, the router makes a single pass... perhaps a special router bit.
Hi everyone, I was hoping somebody could help me out. I got the chance to try a coil while I was out in morocco and fell in love with the speed, as well as the durability, considering I ended up going through two boards while i was out there (Herculese Swell). I tried shooting them and email as well as a facebook message to no avil. I was wondering if anybody knew of a way to get in contact with the guys that shape coil, as I am looking to replace my quiver with boards from them. Any help would be fantastic
Im curious, what email did you try? Coil crew has facebook?! <searching fb>.... huh... they do. Mike Daniel (shaper, find him under that name 'round here) posts in this forum quite often, you could PM or email him. They're hard working guys, so be patient if the answer takes a little over 24 hrs.
Nice pics, amine! Thanks for letting your friends test-ride your board while you were in Morocco.
I've got a couple of pics too. Color on tail is back. Orange and green shown, all will be with black rails. Blue, red, yellow, silver, black, grey, and pink are available too. It's a $30 option.
Yellow is the color it just pops.I saw a pic on the ERBB of kirk holding a yellow board and I like the that was done. The way the color is used is opposite of the pics you posted.
Hey guys, after a few weeks of researching where I woul dbe getting anew board from and reading alot of your posts i ordered a board from mike!. I can't wait to see how it turns out it should be done shortly, and I hope that orange on the deck is mine! haha.
My 5'4 M80 (1st Gen Kick) seems to have delammed at the footwells and under the traction pad... it doesnt feel soft like a poly would but Im genuinely worried that it may spread out since this board is my bread and butter and I'd hate to see it decay. I only noticed today so I have no idea how long its been like this or if it has gotten any deeper/larger.
Its a year old, surf it A LOT really, anything from knee to HH which is like 65-70% of the year, 3-6 hrs at a time, it's workload should go down a bit this year... maybe.
yeah Surfercross, I think there is a bump next week. Let's shoot some photos next week. Just let me know where you guys are. I should be in that stretch b/w Spanish house and RC's.
I keep wanting to mention this but I keep forgetting. During the 3 previous trips to Maroc..:)
The guys would pick up the board (Kick version) early before I wake up and stash it along with 6 other boards/longboards on top of the car with zero protection. Countless trips and board was pretty much thrown everywhere you could imagine. Board is still in perfect condition after 10 months of abuse and board is always sitting at the beach for anyone use. I could ride it today and it feels the same exact way I bought it on day 1. It's Awesome.
Coil Blur: 5'11" x 18 7/8" x 2 3/8" with 0.88 ft^3. Took it out to Blackies Newport Beach this afternoon. Some great sets coming through about at 3-5ft. Definitely the board I've been longing for to be rode to reach the next step. Thanks again Coil!
And the coil gang (missing bladed fish and step up blur)
I think this will be my last set of futures. Too hard to get in and out haha. I need to make the switch.

That's fantastic news, Mike. Especially since I just ordered a new Blur!

the rusty blackstix should compliment the board well

Nice looking board rider of waves. What model is it? Dims?
Have a great experience in Tanzania!
r.o.w. may be a little busy getting ready for his journey, so I'll answer for him.
Thats a 5' 10.5" x 18 1/8" x 2 1/8" 2014 edition squash tail Qualifier. Extra-strong lam schedule on this one, so it's kinda heavy at 5lbs dead :)
[email protected]
Looks damn fine! r.o.w. you should do that board some justice and snap a few more pics :) (when you get the chance)
Agreed. That board looks dope.
Coil rules..:)
Shot in Morocco. Rider is Zach. He said board is light and fast. M80.

Pretty sweet! Good luck in Taz.
Pretty cool to see the coils in Moroco.Bringing the third world into the new world.

food for thought maybe.
hi,,
it has holes in it, so it won't work, that is what mike said some time ago on the new futures too.
oooooh... thanks for clearing that up :)

Thank you, I will try that...also if you don't mind me asking, what does a custom shaped board from them usually run for?
