Carbon Fiber

CARBON FIBERPolymer fibers produced by the pyrolysis (incineration that chemically decomposes organic materials by heat in the absence of oxygen) of organic precursor fibers such as rayon, the polymer polyacrylonitrile, and pitch in an inert atmosphere. The term is often used interchangeably with graphite; however, carbon fibers and graphite fibers differ in the temperature at which the fibers are made and heat-treated, and the amount of carbon produced.
