I ordered two boards from Toby/Rich Pavel. Both turned into disasters and he just shrugged and told me nothing was wrong. One came with a different fin setup than I ordered...he told me 'this' fin set up was better for me....(B.S. he could have told me that before I picked up the board). The other board he kept insisting that I go with FCS plugs , because the glasser was offering them for free about 8-9 years ago, at first I didnt want them , but during the shaping appt. he kept pushing the issue so I eventually conceded, well I always get really thin tails, ....so the glasser couldnt fit in the plugs where they should go....and I got fin placements that was half an inch higher than marked.....Toby told me 1/2" was nothing. In each case, I knew he was snowing me and each time he did nothing about the philosophy of taking care of the customer. Of course, I wasnt a friend of his , just some schlub who walked into his shop from over 100 miles away and ordered two boards. The board with the FCS plugs up to far it was on a Quad finned Round Pin Kneeboard, I tried it once and then tossed it in the trashcan.(I'm not kidding). It wasnt worth the work or money for me to try to get these right, I had other boards. The other board was a Quad Fish which was for large waves presumably.....it worked in up to Medium Strength Head High waves after that it would slide out. I think I was able to sell this board....didnt feel too bad about selling it as it would be an okay board for a beginner. So heres the deal, I go to pick up the two boards, ones got the wrong fins, the other has fin placements not set on the marks....and he bullshits me! Between the boards that I got from him, the B.S. I got about my requirements not being filled, and the Spacey RockPipe Philosophical Talk that I couldnt understand in his shaping room....it was just the worst experience ever that I've had with a shaper. One more thing, I gave cash for my down payment, but should have figured something was up when he wouldnt take a credit card for the rest. I've probably dealt with about 8-9 shapers in my lifetime and have even shaped/glassed my own boards... He took me for a schlub , he forgot about the schlub, and the schlub doesnt forget to tell his story.
Pavel wont be very impressed with you Austin if it all ends up being Ok and he was waiting for the blank to be made. Have you called him to ask about this or did you just decide to publish it on one of the most popular surf message boards on the internet for the world to see.
Rich Pavel, As a fellow shaper, I think it would be best to put this kooks board at the bottom of the stack. Carl
every try a romanowsky knee board, he is super dependable to deal with, not saying the other guy isnt..it just seems like a whole bunch of drama for you, you speak of the 200$ like it was 2million, sounds to me like if this guy makes you a board it will be art, as for the guy who tossed the kneeboard, i would have been stoked to stumble by your trash can www.rotvideo.com
It seems like there are all types of personalities in the shaping world... free form guys who do it for kicks, "micrometer-man" obsessive compulsive types who carry measurements to the tenth decimal place, computer shapers, massive volume maniacs who can crank out 10 boards (or more) a day, "artists", "gurus", etc, etc... know your shaper and deal with it. I don't know Rich Pavel but it sounds like you're being overly harsh. For one thing, a deposit is usually NON-refundable and serves to compensate the shaper for a custom blank order, his time talking to you about the shape and so forth. You've ordered a board and paid the deposit but haven't talked to him about the shape yet? He hasn't ordered a special blank yet? MAYBE you're entitled to a refund. Don't count on it. Cut the guy some slack, Jack... maybe he's having some shit going on in his life that you don't even want to be privvy to. Maybe his mom died. Maybe he's in rehab. Maybe he was invited on a boat trip to Mentawai on short notice. One week isn't very long and to attempt a boycott on a public forum like this seems like an over reaction. If it was me, you'd definitely get your money back just to get you out of my hair and you'd be lucky if you didn't get sued.
I agree, one week isn't that long. Not all shapers are the business man type, concentrating on their customer service, some are more of the eccentric artist type. And lets face it, getting boards isn't like getting a burger from McDonalds. God forbid if it ever is.
i fail to see the connection between not accepting credit cards and being labelled a shady businessman. i've always accepted only cash or checks. the convenience of credit cards to the customer doesn't offset the hassle (and 3% off the bottom line) for me. seems like a trivial point. jim dunlop
I can understand your paranoya a lot of shapers do not do bussiness like other places I ordered a board from Natural Foil in South Africa. The guy was a freind of my fathers for years and was our next door neighbour at one stage his son was in my class. He made me wait 8 months for a board. He made my brother wait for a year and 4 months for a board, eventually we had to go to his shaping shop and just take a board off the rack to the value of the money he had paid him already. This is not the case for the bigger labels and all the ligit guys out there. But it's these small fly by nights that come up they want the best of both worlds. I say if you want to shape and sell, treat it like a bussiness that it is.
Sounds like a great argument for non-refundable deposites. If you couldn't afford the board why did you order it.
