yea the surf business is a joke --always has been. It's a fashion business isn't it?Yes i buy custom boards and always pay retail i have no problem with it,kinda enjoy putting my money in it.I just can't swallow all the bad talking negative ,anti this anti that.To be honest I don't care about politics and didn't think this is a_ political forum anyway --enough said.
"Longboard riding" as part of an insult?? Talk about UNAmerican!! Longboards are to surfing what Thomas Jefferson was to the founding of our country. That's low mista...if I had a rubba hose I'd!
call me on your cell phone.
I agree. It's the free enterprise competitive system we all live in that allows all of us the privelage to buy whatever products we desire. It also allows each of us to make and sell our products in a free system without government mandates relating to what we may produce. I don't fret much either about the foreign surfboards. When the US auto makers almost lost their entire industry in the 80s to Japan, it was that very threat that made them buckle down, and get back to producing what Americans wanted...quality at a good price. I say the foreign pop-out boards are just an opportunity for us to keep on it, pressing on toward making the best, most beautiful, functional, handmade surfboards in the world. This very forum is designed for just that - for us to work together, helping one another, seeking perfection in our endeavors. It's all about pride in work. Everything else will take care of itself! Now, let's get back to work eh?
THE DECLINE OF THE AMERICAN SHAPER STARTED LONG AGO! its ashame, but thats how it is! the surf shop owners are buisiness men and want to make a margin! can you blame them? i dont agree with it myself, but i'm tired of people crying about how bad it is!, the ball is already rolling! if you want the nice things in life then pick a new buisiness! if you want to srape by and surf every day then stay where you are!
Of course as workers go Americans want more money and more benifits and want to work less and complain more. Our jobs are going overseas partly because of the sorry state of the american worker and unions.
Atom Tan wrote: "Of course as workers go Americans want more money and more benifits and want to work less and complain more. I think that due to the wealth we've gained through the industrial revolution, we've become to expensive to support. Everyone wants to have a SUV, big house, 32(+)" widescreen TV, DVD player, etc. We're consumers and we want more. To get more we need to be payed more. The Chinese farmer who've gotten by with a bowl of rice for himself and his family is a very economical worker, he doesn't need a SUV, Widescreen TV, etc. to get by. His life is improved heaps by the few dollars he's paid. Only thing that's bad about the Chineese worker taking over is the fact that the big corp. get's a huge profit without the same regard for health issues and working hours for the Chineese workers. With the attitude of the American for buying 'homeland' products, I will do my share. I'll buy my 'homeland' made products first, then European made, then Chineese made. After all, China is closer than the US. regards, Håvard PS. if you don't get the sarkasm in the last paragraph, go f**k yourself. Now over to what *really* matters which is what this forum is all about.
Put it in discussion, not design forum. Move on, grow up. Go catch a few waves and calm down a bit.
What I dont understand is why companys are allowed to do business in a commie country like China and then not allowed to do business in another commie country like Cuba????????? I guess Cuba doesnt have enough money to pay off the politications. We cant even legaly have Cuban cigars in this country but we sure can buy anything made in China. There is a double standard. I cant wait till the rest of the 3rd world is up to economic speed and every country is on a level playing field, it will happen. Then lets see where the ball drops, right now the playing field is not level. I still belive the best product and service will win in the end. The trouble with 90% of the shapers in this country is they brought part of the china problem on themselves. Let me tell you why, they are surfers to start with. When the surf is up what do they do, instead of finishing up a batch of 15 boards for Anybody surshop, they blow off work and go surfing. To hell with the shop whos waiting on boards, i see this so much its crazy. Now the shops can make one call and have China boards delivered in days, they dont have to wait on kooky shapers. Next surfers arent the smartest business people in the world and this is another reason so many SS fail, surfers trying to run a business for the most part is disaster. Now dont get me wrong, some shapers go the extra mile and do what it takes but most do not. Me on the other hand have constantly kissed my customers ass, build the best boards possible, taken boards back when it wasnt my fault, worked instead of surfing overhead waves and have delivered my boards when I said they would be there. As a result I have had my best year ever in 03 even with the China thing going full speed. There are plenty of things we as shapers and glassers can do to fight the china effort and be very successful, I have been doing this for over 20 years and made a very good living. I dont know if most shapers are smart enought to figure it out. They are the ones that will get left behind.
