See, I got to thinking tonight and it made me very happy. I realised that some of my friends derided me for spending too much time with my boards... I told them that i polish my fins after and before every surf and i try to de- wax all boards after every surf. What i realised is that every time i do something to my board whether it is waxing or de-waxing or ding repair or polishing my fins, I learn something about my board. Whether it be that my fin has a new scratch or i realise what a certain aspect of the design of my board contributes to the whole it all counts and it is something that they ( my freinds) miss out on. This is why their surfing and shaping does not progess... We are not geeks, we just see further. Good surfing and peace... love Dan
You are a freak bro, to actually sit there and polish your fins and de-wax your boards before and after each surf is way out there. You will be wandering around the beach parking lot muttering and swearing at children before you know it. Maybe it would be a good idea to find something for yourself to do as soon as you get home from surfing, that way you wont feel the compulsion to check to see if there is a new scratch on those fins. I used to have a similar problem with chronic masturbation, and the first thing the shrink told me was to keep myself busy at all times.

I know this truck driver guy. He's got this dolly for loading and unloading. He's always polishing it, regreasing or repainting it. ...and he's not a dummy but you got to figure that kind of energy should be spent improving yourself....college courses or something.
and you hal are that driver, huh?

Aw come on guys.WHen Jim Phillips made me my first backyard board way back in 1963 I would put it in my bedroom and practice knee paddling strokes so I could build up Surf Knots on my knees to look cool.I became one of the best dry land cross steppers in Hawaii..not to mention hanging heels.PLayed Beach Boys music in the background...guess I was a Freak at 15 years old.Pat Curren supposedly used to hang templates above his bed so he could study them.Give us kids a break eh?
Thanks cleanlines. Give this guy a break. I mean how many times have you and your buddies snuck into the garage late at night at your girlfriend's birthday party to oogle someones quiver? How many ENDLESS conversations have you have regarding what board you were going to get next and why. How many times have you brought that brand new board into the house to gaze and stroke between dinner and bed. If you haven't been guilty of "board love" at least once, maybe you'll never know the true meaning of the word. And that's sad, because board love is a beautiful thing. Enjoy, S.
Dave, James and Hal and other comedians, It really bums us out when someone is expressing something genuine and you totally dis them. Your words stifle others from feeling like they can express themselves and that defeats the whole puprose here. In the future, if you feel the urge bust on someone, please keep it to yourself. Thanks, S
Hey I scan instead of deep-read alot of the posts. I came to this thread several posts down and thought this thread was about someone posting about someone he knew.....Little did I know. So I just posted my exp. with someone else I knew who sounded similar......Simple. I'm not out to rain on some one elses parade.... especially a beginning surfer. Actually, there is alot to be learned by taking care of your equiptment.....but this stage should taper off after awhile after you learn what is necessary and required maintenance and the time intervals for these things.
Been surfing since 1964 and I love surfboards. Next to women, they are about the most sensual form I know. Hell, I have 35 of them in house between my son and I that I oggle all the time. One wife that loves me and 35 boards - life is good! If you don't love surfboards, why in hell would you be on this site? Pete
