Good question, probably wood cores to start followed by fibre glass cores foiled with a covering of carbon/glass composite stolen from board crazy's shed when he's not looking.

....here's a foam core , sprayed , fibreglass copy of the polycarbonate $15.40 fin ** I mentioned on the 'phone ....
depth : 6 1/2"
base : 4 3/4 "
rake : c 3 3/4"
I hope this helps your fish hold in better in the bigger stuff , mate !!
